Keep in mind, if we continue from where we are now inKirk's timeline, we won't get a new WoK, we'll get a new Space Seed.

Which would probably be considered too slow for this new audience they are hunting for, so we will wind up with this hybrid bastard child of Space Seed and TWoK

Probably something along those lines, yeah. If they do a Khan movie, I expect the Botany Bay will be found by a different Starfleet vessel, and the Enterprise will end up having to save the day.

From what I understand, many Trek-related people look at this board. The outcome of this poll may well decide whether there'll be Khan in the sequel.

Or it might just be us.

Well they should definitely have Khan in the sequel if the alternative is just us.

:guffaw:

To expand on my point a little, one of the things that made WoK great was Khan's animosity towards Kirk, 20+years of it. We won't get that here, and Khan will just be another Shinzon or, dare I say it, Nero.

No. You may not even get that. At least not with Kirk and the Enterprise. Could be the crew of the Lexington, Hood, or Constellation comes across Khan. Maybe the Klingons do. Could be nobody finds his ship in this timeline. Ever.

Look, could they make a good Khan story? Sure. Why not. Point conceded. Orci and Kurtzman could also probably do a very serviceable version of "Errand of Mercy", "Balance of Terror", or even "The Trouble with Tribbles" if they wanted to. But what the hell for? The slate is clean. Khan is the only "money in the bank" idea out there? Then, let's just shut it all down. Now. One and done.

Let's keep one thing in mind, too. TWOK worked only because of "Space Seed". Not that anyone had to know any specific thing about the episode, because Bennett and the other writers did such a good job of making it a stand alone story. But the events of "Space Seed" are why Khan is where he is, and why he's sworn vengence on Kirk.
"Space Seed" itself, the first time we meet Khan, was a middle-of-the-road quality TOS story. Bennett and Meyers used the bones of it to create TWOK. And Khan became Khaaaaaaaaaan in that movie, not the TV episode.

I think Abrams and Orci are having us on. Serve up a nice big red herring just to get some buzz going about a sequel. They should take it the next step, and say they think Tom Hanks would make a wonderful Khan.

No Khan please. Mssrs Orci & Kurtzman - you've already screwed continuity to enable a bunch of pretty young things to replace an originally experienced TOS crew in their 30's/40's. Irrepairable damage has been done to that credibility now as far as I'm concerned, so I trust you have more than the slightest idea how to make this "alternate reality" work. Make sure you concentrate on how the 5 year mission of exploration is established. How in the name of the Great Bird, a twenty-something could be put in charge of that I'm frankly not sure about. Pissed off a few Admirals maybe, so pack him off to the outer limits with the distinct possibility he'll never be seen or heard from again. Sure throw in some Romulan or Klingon skirmishes, with their ships lurking around the corner, but while your crafting the script keep in mind one thing. Namely the original opening speech about strange new worlds and seeking out new life and new civilizations... Stick with that and forget about retreading any villain with even the slightest Khan fixation.

the typical over dramatic trek fanboy is a person who cannot see the sun because his/her head is fixely placed up there on arse. :p nice to see the breed alive and strong.

Awful idea. Leave that one to the fan fiction writers.

Yeh because they don't suck...Trek fan fiction is 99% garbage due the amount of self given fanwanks given out on how the believe canon should be.

Don't blame the rest of us for seeing a crappy idea when you can't ;)

Way to make this personal. Grow up and accept that there are just as many who passionately believe in what you obviously do not.

Well, your argument actually works best in reverse. The TOS movies dealt with aging and experience. They dealt with the feeling of obsolescence versus still having something to contribute. The movies wound things down for the crew, not up.
So, why can't these new movies deal with the issues of youth and inexperience? Yes, some admirals should resent Kirk's quick ride to the top. He got lucky. They should believe he needs to earn his chops. Perhaps the Enterprise is given its mission exactly for the reasons you give above. Let Kirk go explore-play in the back yard. But damn it all if Kirk doesn't confound everyone with adventures that prove he's exactly where he should be. Let's see this crew earn respect. Let's test their inexperience. Let's see a Kirk from back in the days before a 50-something Kirk mused that upon review, a lot of his skill and clever thinking over the years may have been just luck. Let's see the clever Kirk.

That is exactly what I'm saying. It is fan fiction material.

They already tried to remake The Wrath of Khan once. It was called 'Nemesis'. It sucked.
