Blowing off steam ...

^ I was thinking the same thing. (Those old Barber's chairs are very comfortable though.) And I love the lever switch on the right arm. It has a very very "Time Machine" look to it. ;)

And the more I look at this the more I want to try my hand at some Steam Trek designs myself. I have this nifty idea for the TNG bridge I would like to trot out.

Actually, as turned up in the discussion about this on the DAZ site, the time machine in George Pal's movie was a barber's chair! It started out as an 1899 Berninghaus "Hercules"; the footrest was moved up to become the headrest, and the pedestal was replaced with legs.

Here's the latest - getting closer ...

Well, some major progress to show. The captain's chair is nearly done, but I may be going back to rebuild the back cushion into something a little less modern. Chairs have all been replaced with new models, rather than repurposed ones from another set (with a little Easter Egg thrown in :techman: ), and the helm/nav area has been updated, as well:

I also jettisoned the mandala carpet for something a bit less, ahem, garish; fans new and old might recognize it ;). It's a bit muted at this point; I may highlight the insignias in gold to make it a little more 'Victorian.'

Easter egg: the pattern on the back of the original chairs echoed in the metal work on these!

As for the carpet, that's the pattern used on the new movie's uniforms, right?

You got it!! :bolian: I was actually rather surprised that no one on the other site where this all came about twigged to that - I put a lot of thought and work into getting those triangles in place (I actually got them upside-down on the first attempt! ;)).

And, yes, as well, to the carpet texture. I had a lot of complaints about the original pattern I used, and frankly I wasn't too enamored of it, either, but I'm no interior decorator. When I decided to change it, I was scouting through my various textures and saw the uniform design and thought, "Hey! Topical and kinda cool - let's see what that looks like!" and it actually worked pretty well, I thought, for breaking up the space and adding some richness to it. Of course, I still need to try it with gold chevrons, just to make it a tad more 'Victorian' in execution.

And I can see a 23rd C. Mr. Mott standing behind Kirk with a towel and the razor ;). Just as a joke, I can see the horn being used as a flo-bee :D.

Well, I tried the carpet with gold insignias - wow, it's bold! Not sure if I'm even going to bother posting it. I've got a couple variations on it to try - I may put up a composite just to show. We'll see.

Instead of *all* the insignias in the carpet being bold, maybe only a small percentage of them? Set up a pattern where only, say, 1 in 10 is gold.

Well, a few more progress shots - it's blowing up into a full-fledged steampunk extravaganza, what with replacing every single poly in the OS bridge with new pieces. In a couple weeks, I should have it all done (I hope), with only tweaking and fixes left to think about.

I've also resurrected my old televox from the May 2006 TrekArt Challenge:

I think I may need to reduce them about 15% ...

Currently, I'm building the main body of the bridge, with exposed girders that (hopefully) imply that it may in fact be contained within a large spherical structure (although clearly I've compromised the integrity of the structure for aesthetics ;)):

Lookin' nice Ptrope. It is always fun to see a new take in a completely different light. I am truly enjoying your work on this. Any chance we will see a sickbay or engineering room?

Glad you like 'em! Sickbay & Engineering will depend on my creativity and time - if the bridge is popular enough, I may expand ;). I've had a vague vision in my head of the bridge for a very long time, but those two have never really tickled my mind. Plus, I still have to finish my '4th season' update to the engineering room from TOS, the one with the upper level catwalks and a more industrial feel overall.

This is turning out to be really awesome. :) I especially like the new computer consoles, and the communicator watches. :)

I see you already made the handrails much like modern wooden staircase rails, but did you consider doing them in brass as well? I immediately thought of something like you see in the older areas of Penn Station in NYC.

I guess I am a little late to the party but when I designed the bridge to the HMAS Daunless in 2001 for the Steam Trek website (http://steam-trek.com) I had some very different ideas.

First an formost the ship needs to have a ship's wheel, or for navigation in three dimentions, a wheel within a wheel. A binnacle is also a must have, along with a engine telegraph. These would be in the hands of the stearsman.

The navigational/tactical stations would require armillary spheres and between them a grand orrey.

The communications station needs wires and jack board like an old style operators station.

The Captain's chair would have various speaking tubes to each side.

Check out the picture by Cory Gross and the deck plan that I generated at http://www.steam-trek.com/bridge.php

I like the approaches demonstrated above but I can see you have started with Star Trek and worked toward steampunk where I have started with Classic Victorian Steampunk and worked toward Star Trek.

I wish I had the skill to render in 3D but alas do not have the time or energy to learn a new skill. below are some 2D drawings that get my ideas across. Might anyone be interested in working on some of my designs for the website.
