I was recently digging through some very old post I made on another forum, and I discovered these little gems.
Right after Star Trek 2009 came out, I was overjoyed to have a new look for Starfleet ships, especially the Kelvin. I was also a huge fan of Enterprise, who was supremely disappointed that we never got to witness the Romulan War.
So of course I took my fascination with the Kelvin and my love of Enterprise and mixed them together the only way I knew how.... MS Paint.
I worked out a plot line in my head that the NX Class was expensive and difficult to produce and so Starfleet started building off the design and going with a progressively simplified design. That's where my NY Class started.
I envisioned the NY Class to have started production before the outbreak of the war, hence it being extremely "NX" with its various components. Once the war broke out, Starfleet, not wanting to throw away a good design, started modifying the design. It started relatively minor; armour coverings over warp coils, straight pylons, additional weapon ports, a much simpler Kelvin style bridge, complete with windows. My reasoning with the windows being that the Romulans could have developed various electronic warfare systems designed to mess with Starfleet sensors and such, which could possibly have an effect on the viewscreen. A window isn't always a great option, but it beats flying 100% blind. The additional weapon ports would eventually become similar to the pulse weapons seen on the Kelvin; possibly a sorta CIWS designed to counter Romulan nuclear missiles.
As the war dragged on and times grew desperate, the design of the NY Class would become even further simplified. Stripped away would be virtually every system not related to combat until it wasn't much more then a mobile weapons platform. New weapon systems such as phaser ball turrets would become the new main offensive weapon, while the CIWS were greatly expanded.
When the war was finally over, Starfleet would have found themselves with a surplus of warships, so a massive refit operation was put in place and the NY Class would finally be able to fulfill its original purpose of exploration. This would complete the transformation of the ship from the "Enterprise era" and bring it into the "Kelvin era" of the early Federation.
