Black Friday indeed

A story like that says a lot about our culture, and where it's headed.

Regarding the top half, what people are willing to do on Black Friday in the name of great savings is pathetic, sad, yet also pretty telling.

Regarding the bottom half, what ever happened to something called common sense? When you're buying material wants (not needs), how hard is it to not spend more money than you actually have? If you pay off your credit card in full every month, you don't end up with late fees.

Everybody please remember to not Post complete articles.

No, it's about Human nature. The species hasn't been down from the trees for very long.

Simply calling it human nature doesn't excuse it. This is the 21st century for crying out loud. It sure as hell is not in my nature to trample someone dead in a Wal-Mart over a Nintendo Wii or Playstation 3 or whatver they were fighting for. I was smart enough to purchase my Wii online :p. Personally I think the local district attorny should determine the names of every person involved in the Wal-Mart incident and charge them for involuntary manslaughter or something. This shit has to stop.

I would never excuse it. My point is that culture is not to blame; lack of culture is to blame.

I think that sometimes some people are just violent assholes, regardless of culture.

Out of the millions of people who went shopping Friday morning, these few incidents occurred, and the media pounced onto them. They're certainly tragic, but don't let the coverage get anyone thinking that it's somehow common, or a sign that society's collapsing.

I don't think it was common but it is damned sad. The worst part for me was the customers who complained that the WalMart was closing because of the death.

We always had people like that, in every generation since Adam and Eve. There are more media coverage these days, much more intense than a few decades ago, so it seems like things are getting worse.

Better yet, don't use credit cards at all. Cash works great.

Whatever Century we live in has no bearing on the people and how they act. There are points in our past where people were more polite and well mannered than today.

In the case of the shooting incident, authorities beleive there was an ongoing dispute between the parties involved in said shooting, possibly gang-related. In other words, it appears to be nothing involving "getting the best sale price on the hot item", but something that could have happened anywhere.

As I was telling my buddies, you know we live in a society that is waaay too obsessed with consumerism when things like Black Friday come with death tolls and casualty reports.

Except it happened to have occurred in the store, during the sale. You think that's just a coincidence?

It's definitely not surprising that the store would try to downplay the seriousness of it. If people suspect that they could be shot the next time they blunder into the store like a load of stupid sheep, they might wake up and stop doing it. :vulcan:

I know this is a different tone, but these news are already in the other Black Friday thread.

And though I'm not the last to hate consumerism, here I would rather focus on its cynical strategies. Reproducing wartime shortage-like conditions is despicable.

Why can't they practice more decent prices in the first time? Why is the price tag what people are led to pay for, and not what the item is worth?

In times of economic crisis, store chains should be more responsible and considerate of the consumer.

Not necessarily. I'm saying that from what the investigating authorities have said, the event being being Black Friday does not appear to have been the factor. It could very easily have been just because this was a large crowd setting, any large crowd such as at a concert, a rally, a sporting event, etc. There isn't enough evidence to indicate that this tragedy occurred over a dispute from shopping.
Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Gutierrez said the fight was not over a toy and that handguns were found by the men's bodies.
Palm Desert Councilman Jim Ferguson said police told him two men with handguns shot and killed each other.

"I think the obvious question everyone has is who takes loaded weapons into a Toys "R" Us?" he said. "I doubt it was the casual holiday shopper."

I'm sorry, but people, if it's a hard to get toy now, have Santa send the kid a gift card to buy the thing after Christmas. A toy is not worth killing for.

Well, since they stepped over him and kept on shopping instead of sticking around, it will be hard to determine who was involved. I hope they do catch them, though, and I hope they get charged with more than involuntary manslaughter.
