It would be unnecessary to mention an author's whiteness in a story like this. The media always specifies when people are black in stories such as this as some kind of subtle implication that racial discrimination was involved. It's an attempt to stir shit up and make things into bigger deals than they are.You mean WHITE author Harlan Ellison, don't you?
Interesting. I'd never even heard of this. Reminds me of the movie "Hoosiers." It was based on the life of a relative of mine(the coach who was played by Gene Hackman), but they ended up changing enough stuff that they didn't have to pay him. Still, it gave him a lot of publicity at the time and we all went to the theater to see it. He got an autobiography deal out of it at least, and Bush Sr. Invited him to the White House.
Not sure why the authors ethnicity has to be pointed out, though.
