I didn't want to derail the liquid species thread by posting this hypothesis there, so here it is.
The original humanoids (from "The Chase") realized that their civilization was declining and tried to find others like themselves. The discovered that they were alone and left a scattered series of clues for their eventual descendants to learn of their heritage.
Around this time some members of their society on Vagra II discovered a way to transmogrify their flesh into a liquid form capable of taking on any shape. The new gelatinous bodies were impervious to the aging process and much stronger. This new form, a blood-red goop, supported a group mind that emerged when more than one of the new members physically merged. The chaos of all those voices in one space nearly drove the people mad.
To counteract this a program of holistic "psychosurgery" excised all personality traits that caused disharmony within the mental link. This process changed the individual's body to a golden color, while cast-off material turned black and inky. Shortly after this process was completed disaster struck, and the newly-created Great Link took to space to find a new homeworld, leaving the excretions of their personalities on Vagra II. The black, tarlike mass eventually collected into a single body and achieved consciousness of its own, though it was far too late to call to its brethren.
The Great Link flew for thousands of years, spending the intervening years learnign how to form new shapes and creatures from its mass. When they finally encountered emergent societies they were initially peaceful, but chased away out of fear. The members of the Great Link barely remembered their history, and were unaware that these "Solids" were actually their descendants. Vague memories of past lives imprinted into the Great Link new individual identities, with appearances taken from their old bodies.
