Birth of the Federation II

Posted by McAvoy:
I hope it works out. Sounds great. Does anyone have an estimate on how big the game will be? I'm just saying since even with cable internet, downloading something that massive will take awhile.

I saw this interview today with the lead developer of this game and it should hopefully answer all your questions!

^ Thanks for that link ... currently reading it. Interesting bit I noticed in that interview:-

[Zach] BOTF2 is currently going to be freeware, are there any plans to have the game published and sold?

[Gavin] That depends if anyone out there can convince viacom, paramount and atari not to sue us to high heaven. Otherwise no, although we are considering a donations page when the game is released.
Hopefully they don't sue ... as from everything I've read about BOTF2, it sounds one of hell of a game.

I also like how you can play as the Dominion. That is something that I like.

Maybe I should ask at the community board, but do you have the pictures of the minor race structures? The pictures on the board don't work...

Or you may be hoarding them.

The more I read about this, the more ecited I get by it. Which is bad if it takes a few more months at minimum.

You know, i hope that they fix a major problem in the game. I'm talking about the size of the Vor'Cha and the Negh'Var. We all know that the Negh'Var is the biggest ship that the Klingons have and yet it was smaller than the Vor'Cha. I really hope they fix that.

I'm the same ... but a few months suits me well, as by then I should have a new PC finally. I like the idea of more minor races and what they can do.

what are the main features of the new version? A more complex gameplay? What is going to change with respect to BOTF1?
From the already mentioned article in Trek Online we know:
[*] It has a MOO3 map system (!)
[*] Surface Combat will be allowed somehow
[*] AI that works with the keyword principle, even in klingon(!)
[*] Starts with the NX-01 and last, with mods, more than 1000 years (!)
[*] Ship Battle tactics will be allowed, ala Picard's manouver
[*] The Borg and the ferengies will be minor races, along many others. Default playable races are the Federation, the Cardassians, the Klingons, the Romulans and the Dominion.

I hope we can rename our ships and set up captains properly. It would be nice to add ship and/or fleet commanders to the fest. Also if we were able to manouver ships into systems and do battle from there. Also orbital platforms helping starbases would be a nice boost in defence. I liked the sector approach. I hope they won't dump it while embracing the MOO3 style.

Opinions?

Greetings

Alex

I also hope that the developers of BOTF2 decide to consider the Bird of Prey as a battle cruiser rather than a scout ship. I found that annoying in the first game.

I'm looking forward to this one, though!

I think these problems can be fixed either at the game conception ,or through patches or even mods.

The gameplay is what is most important, and how many features will be mod friendly. Apparently many will be.

They already have the K'Vort. It makes sense to me, they needed a Klingon counterpart to the scout.

As did i. Well, honestly, while they are annoying, they are minor problems because the game paly is what matters.

Why would the Bre'el be a battle cruiser? It's tiny.

The K'vort IS the battle cruiser, and much more logical. Bre'el was built for battle but not as a mainstay of a fleet.

True enough. Yeah, the K'Vorts are awesome aren't they? Oh, also, i hope that the Vor'Cha's and the Negh'Vars can cloak. Always bugged me.

I think they've decided they can cloak, since it's canonical. They're also adjusting the sizes so that the Vorcha isn't the largest ship.

Oh, good! Man, i can't wait for this!

gameplay! gameplay! gameplay!

Other than what was mentioned before, there is little information about it. I hope they will not go in the wrong direction, ala Master of Orion III

^Have you had a look at their discussion board. It goes into a lot of detail. They seem to share your opinion of MoOIII so I doubt it will go that way. ;)
