Birth of the Federation II

I'm still playing BOTF today, it surely is a game with near unlimited replayability, and the start to midgame is really fun.

What are you guys opinions on the difficulty of the different races? It seems to me that the federation (with their ability to be attract minor races, excellent research and good economy - trade centers), the romulans (excellent morale - almost everything you do, be it declaring war or making peace, pleases the subjects - good intel, cloaked ships give big advantage) and the ferengi (everything including diplomacy does run on credits, and their ships aren't half-bad either) are quite a bit easier to play than Klingons (bad economy, and the romulans are still stronger at combat with good use of the cloak) and cardassians (they are better at subjugating, but iMO this doesn't make much difference and fed or ferengi credits are usually the better way to expand). Perhaps those latter 2 races are easier at higher tech starting levels, when they actually have the power to subjugate minors quickly (this is quite lacking at low tech, robbing Cardassia of their supposed main advantage). Thoughts?

this is a viable project with the beta testing coming up within a month or so. there is a borg incursion mod for the origanel made by myself, it was the first mod with new ships in it.
there is also two other mods with new ships, dafadz`s ultimate mod, and a total conversion to the b5 universe by myself. you can get them plus just about every mod for botf from armada fleet command botf site you can also get all the patchs plus jokers xp patchs, also available is an iso copy of the game for download. plus a load of tools for modding the game. armada fleet command

TerakRall - The link was down for me too. But if you click on the link in The DOS Machines sig, and the go to the BotF II page from there it works. Not much to see really, except for this image which looks uber f-king cool.

I've been a member of the botfii forums over at armadafleetcommand for ages now. i haven't been over tehre for a while, but i always had the impression that this project would be the one that actually took off (for those that don't know there have been hundreds of abortive botfii fan projects before).

glad they're doing well, and i hope it meets expectations.

My original CD I bought when it first came out is so scratched that I had to replace it. Funny thing is that with all the newer games I play, I still play it far more than any other.

Ironically, my favorite game was so buggy that it was the one that did crashed my computer. It did a memory core wipe. Right now I have buddy trying to restore my computer.

I have been waiting for a new BotFII game for along time. I thought that the game was popular among Trekkies? You would think that a game with that large a fan base would do very well.

The only thing that bothered me about the game, was the technology. I would have liked the ship design evolve from let's say the Constitution class to the Excelsior class to the Ambassador class to the Galaxy class. The maps should have been larger. The large fleet engagements (with fleets in the 30+ range) should be alittle more exciting than who can throw as many phasers and photons at each other. Basically done in a two turn fight.

i would like to point out with regards to the screenies, the interface pics are totaly cut down while some bug hunting is going on.
the cardassian ship in the early combat screenie is one of mine and i stil need to add more detail to the textures.
the game starts of in the enterprise era, so all ships will
be in, from NX-01 to connie to excelsiour and so on and so forth, these are the feds capital ships and there will of course also be mirandas and the like included.

^Do you know of any plans for the steamrunner classs?

It's nice to see one of the many sequel projects seemingly doing so well. Fingers crossed this one makes it.

As far as I can tell from reading through the posts over at their website, http://botfii.armadafleetcommand.com/index.php they plan on having almost every ship we've ever seen be available.

Here's a short list of Federation ships:

NX, Conestoga, Oberth, Constitution, Excelsior, Miranda, Ambassador, Saber, Galaxy, Akira, Steamrunner, Defiant, Sovereign, Nova, Intrepid, Nebula, Prometheus

I'm sure I forgot a couple of the others.

Do you know what type of features will be put into the game? Also do you know what engine the game will be running on?

I once thought about if I could do a sequel, how I would do it. I would have started off with the 22nd century ships, then go through almost every ship type to Nemesis. Technology wouldn't be in levels, but more like Civilization. Ships would have extra abilities, such as the Science vessel type would be able to explore adfding additional points to Science, no auto trade routes but ships. Fleets would be bigger. You could attack the shipyards along with starbases in that battle. Build multiple ships with emphasis on any ships would want first. Realistic systems. The map would be four times as large. More minor races. Also NPC races like the Tholians, Breen and Gorn among others. Along with the Borg the Dominion would invade and build up their own empire.

Gavin Turfrey has written the code for the turn based section from scratch. the 3d engine for combat is an open source one from 3D State
The tech tree will be very similar to the civ one. This is a vast improvement over the origanel game.
We have about 110 npc races, some of these minors will be able to expand (if they are warp capable) and creath mini empires as it were. Myself and Dafadz have designed new ships for the majors who have no vessels for the enterprise era. Some of the minors such as the xindi, vulcans and andorians have 3 ships for their species. we hope to have most of the federation ships in at one stage or another, such as the steamrunner. but for every new vessel researched then older ones become obsolete, and they will vanish from the build q. there will be no auto-upgrades at all, so for ships to get refitted when new sensors or weapons come along they need to spend time at a starbase or shipyard.

It sounds like everything has been really well thought out. The auto-upgrade was handy but never made any sense, so it's good that it's been removed.

I hope it works out. Sounds great. Does anyone have an estimate on how big the game will be? I'm just saying since even with cable internet, downloading something that massive will take awhile.

it currently stands at about 550 mb, this is without the music ships and various bits and pieces.
no idea how much longer, were very busy with life, sad i know. hopefully the beta will be within a few months
