Birth of the Federation II

I never played the first BotF, but I notice it was made by Microprose. Is it just Civilization with a Star Trek skin? (Which would already make a good game) Or did they really go into detail with the ST universe tech, and making the races different?

In my opinion, BotF was a Master of Orion (also made by MicroProse) with many chunks removed. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed BotF, but coming from a MoO background, it was not at all impressive.

I never played, or heard of MoO. But, i love turn based games...

Yeah, I've played MoO as well (number 2, IIRC), and it was a pretty good game. BotF is pretty good, but I think it could have been a bit better.

Certainly not Civilisation in a mask- the races all play very differently. It's certainly all done with proper attention to detail...

Ugh... this is sorta off topic, but I downloaded the 1.2 update and the XP patch, and it worked on my computer at home, but now at my dorm it isn't. For example, when you get to select the size of the galaxy, it says "Command" instead of small and "Unavailable" instead of Many in the Minor Races selection. It has a lot of those. Also, it works up until I want to start the game, and then it crashes. Anyone know what to do?

/\ Okay, I had that exact same problem when I downloaded the patch, but I'll be damned if I can remember what I did to solve it. I got help from someone around here, so just wait and I'm sure someone will help you out. :)

As a player of both games as well, my opinion is VASTLY different than yours. Moo was contrived and boring, while BOTF brings you into the world of Star Trek with addictive gameplay and very good graphics. It does tend to slow down after turn 100, but save up and restart the game and problem solved.

Indeed. I do not deny that for me, MoO1 and 2 (and 3) as well as BotF were addictive, but I felt that BotF lacked the same depth as MoO. This was especially true in terms of the research model and ship design. Although the space combat in BotF was nifty, in my opinion, it didn't match the level of involvement that combat in, say, MoO2 required of the player.

I was delighted that colony control in BotF was more akin to MoO1 than MoO2, and I liked the way the galactic map was formed (with the different galactic configurations and the way it was divided into sectors.)

As for graphics, I find it strange that one compares a game from 1994 (MoO1) and 1996 (MoO2) to one from 1999 (BotF). Of course BotF has better graphics! If it did not, there would have been an uproar!

I agree that it was addictive, and the graphics were certainly acceptable for a TBSG, but, coming from a rabid CIV fan, BOTF lacked depth. Every turn was about moving ships here, maybe fighting, and I could never get over how the diplomatic aspect of the game boiled down to, "I have money. Want to be a Romulan yet?"

Oh, if there's a part two, I'll give it a whirl, I'm just a bit cynical.

Man, anyone remember the excitement that surrounded the first one coming out? I'd check botf.com, I think it was, every day during computer's class. Something of a tradition. Once I got the game, I played for weeks.

I hated in BOTF when the other races sabotage the crap out of your stuff and you can almost never do it back. Or how no matter how many borg cubes you destroy, another 3 always come in different directions and you just waste ships fighting it while another race builds up and attacks you from behind.

Wow, I remember you. You were on the Universal Evolution forum, right? Do you remember me? I worked on that project and boy did I wish I hadn't.

It's fun to read all the things these people propose, but I have low hopes with fan-made games. I'll only believe it when I see the finished product.

Please indulge us with a good bitch please! :D

Whatever happened to Jeanalltrekker then?

BOTF was a great game, it had a few downfalls though. One was the BORG WERE BLOODY IMPOSSIBLE!!They shoot and your dead. Well, to the poor souls who pick the feds or the Cardies and such. Cuz the game is lopsided, the Romulans are invincible!

They can go to war, and the people are pleased, you make peace, the people are pleased, you cloak your bloody big ships and get first strike in battle (like against the BORG) and you destroy them before they get a shot off, and the people are pleased. I love the Romulans in this game, but only because they can kick everyones butt!

If a second one is made this lopsided flaw needs to be corrected, or if it isn't than I know who I am picking.

I liked it but I thought it would do better if the ship combat scenes allowed more control over what the ships did, rather than simply telling them what maneuver/formation they followed. The gameplay was kinda slow too.

Giving ships the ability to invade planets would have been a plus too, rather than having to get a troop transport.

I also thought that it was kinda rediculous to have each planet only constructing one building or ship. (The same goes for the rest of the CIV games)

The science thing took too long to go from one technology to the next. I also would have appreciated a more of an "Age Of Empires" thing where the ships reflected the generation/age they were in.

Last I heard Jean had joined some sort of military (or was going to). After all of the accusations of theft he wanted me to work on some dinosaur tycoon BS, but it didn't last and I eventually realized that he was messed up. Especially when he tried to relaunch the project with all new people (and probably my models).

What sucked was that I made like 5 or 6 really good ship models and then I found out at Taldren forums that their current models were all stolen. Made me look like I had stolen mine, which pissed me off. Well, that's what I get for trying to do a fan project with people I don't know.

The things that annoy me about BOTF is again the sabotage aspect, aswell as the Borg showing up far to early in the game sometimes, the way that other races seem to know what squars your moving to next to counter them or attack them, they eway other races seem to be able to just disapear(not clocked), the way one ship can blow up your starbase when you Auto the combat, but you know it just cant do that if you Attack in the combat. I find these things really annoying, however i would still give the game 7/10 for return appeal, and a BOTF2 would be great and a must buy for me if made!

I'd love to see a BotF II. But they need to update the graphics, fix the bugs, adds new techs, new races, and fix the annoying things but keep the gameplay the same. Don't do like MOO3 and make some radically new game that is uber complex and boring.

I used to check out the official BotF site every day in the months before it was released, hoping for it to be released soon, and drooling over the ships and the minor races and whatever...
I was a bit disappointed by the actual game though, but I still liked it a lot. It did crash a lot, so in the end I didn't play it all that much. :(
