Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn)

Yeah, this first trailer (like most of the marketing to this point) has been very, very Harley-centric. But that just makes sense, considering that she's the character that audiences are already familiar with.

This is the first trailer, and for many people it'll be the first notion that this movie will actually come. And most people aren't aware of the Birds of Prey. So, it makes sense to start the marketing with Harley, who has a big fanbase even outside of comics. I do expect the movie to feature the other characters more prominently, and the next few trailers will probably reflect that.

Well, its not everyday that you see such a godawful trailer. I think it actually wins a world record for the most "in name only" characters in a superhero film, with pretty much everyone being "In Name Only". I mean, I guess Margot Robbie is playing a version of Deadp-I mean, New 52 Harley Quinn (who is literally just Deadpool as a woman), but the rest are so completely unrecongniseable that literally no one would be able to tell who they were if they weren't told (and this goes for the villains to, he's called "Black mask" for a reason, its a very literal alias).

I mean, if you put a gun to my head I'd watch this before I'd watch Joker, but that goes for literally any superhero film ever made. DC just refuses to stick to making good movies. I'm starting to wonder if Wonder Woman, Aquaman and Shazam were flukes, and being shit is going to remain DC's guiding principle even now that Snyder is long gone.

I don't see the Deadpool comparison, really. Harley doesn't break the 4th wall, she isn't immortal... I really liked Margot Robbie's Harley and would rather have her and Joker or just her headlining a movie, but after all it's just a movie. Not worth getting all emo about it.

So, in other words, you are going to really like this movie the way you did with Shazam?

Oh, don't mind him. He likes to whine a lot.

One interesting point I missed in the trailer that I noticed in EW's breakdown, is that the guys dancing with Harley in the Marylin Monroe scene are all wearing black masks. Just thought it was worth pointing out since we don't see Scionis in a Black Mask in the trailer.

They are both popular meme characters that has spun off from bigger franchises (X-Men and Batman) that has been heavily pushed by both companies in both publishing (where their books are pumped out without any serious editorial oversight) and various multimedia projects.

For such a long trailer, it sure doesn't indicate a whole lot about what is actually happening in the plot.

I watched the trailer again, and I noticed another reference to Black Masks, in a couple scenes in what appears to be Black Mask's club, there are paintings of people with their faces covered in what appears to be black sharpie or something along those lines.

Apparently Cassandra Cain steals a diamond from Black Mask that he wants back because it's really a container of pics he took of his penis. Cain runs into Harley who agrees to protect her.

After all the stuff based around black masks in his club, I'm starting wonder if he'll just run the Black Mask night club, and that will end up being the origin of his name. Of course that wouldn't rule out him eventually wearing a black mask too, maybe he gets the idea from his club's name.
