Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of one Harley Quinn)

The movie is only little over 4 months away now, and the first trailer is coming out tomorrow, so it's time for a dedicated fantabulous pre-release emancipation anticipation thread! :techman:

To quickly recap the production stuff, the movie's set for release on February 7th. It's directed by Cathy Yan from a script by Christina Hodson and starring Margot Robbie reprising her role as Harley Quinn, joined by Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain, Rosie Perez as Renee Montoya and Ewan McGregor as Black Mask.

There isn't even an official synopsis for the movie out yet so tomorrow will be the first proper look at what's in store for us next February.

Woah, does that poster mean we'll actually get live actions versions of Bud and/or Lou? It never even occurred to me that they might be in this.

Ella Jay Basco as Cassandra Cain

Oh fuck off DC. Fuck right off. Cassandra Cain is a badass fighter, daughter of Lady Shiva with a very compelling history and story. She's not some shitty kid sidekick to Harley Quinn (based on the pics from the set of her dressed in pink/dressed like Harley, she'll have a role like that). I bet she's a motormouth too, and completely inept at fighting :censored: They just want their own negasonic teenage Warhead (although probably with less attitude). I guess if the New 52 and later comic Harley is just Deadpool as a woman, they might as well give her a shitty teenage sidekick in her movie, although at least the Deadpool film took a z-list mutant and didn't ruin a great established character (and also made NTW a pretty good character along the way). I didn't think I could hate a DC movie more then shit like BvS. But, as ever DC/WB shows that there is no rock bottom, they can always tunnel deeper.

Ok, Joker might actually dig DC so low that they exit out the other side of the Earth, but for comicbook movies not made by assholes, and still trying to kind of be a comicbook movie, this shit is pretty damn low. Easily the worst non-Joker "real" comicbook movie from DC.

Also, Cassandra Cain is my third favorite DC hero of all time (after the original Captain Marvel and Power Girl), so DC is seemingly going out of its way to ruin another hero I really like. ts like DC has all my favorites on a hit list and is going through them. I mean, Shazam was a very good film, but the character of "Shazam" is still a third rate version of the actual original Captain Marvel.

I'm kind of on the fence regarding this movie at the moment, but I do like that poster image. If the trailer can convey anything near as fun looking, I'll be convinced to check this out.

So, I'm admittedly not the target audience for this movie. I LOATHE Harley Quinn.

But that... looks terrible. Hopefully it's just me, and fans get a good movie out it.

I don't know, I'm kinda diggin' it. Love 'em or hate 'em but the DC movies have a distinctive vibe from the Marvel ones. That said, I'm not the biggest Harley fan/historian so I might have different expectations than someone who is more intimately familiar with her appearances and stories.

I had been highly skeptical of this but the trailer looks like a lot of fun. Harley is acting more like the character in the Animated Series.

Big question is whether Black Canary and Huntress are going to be heroic characters with their own stories. As opposed to gloried sidekicks to Harley.

One of my best friends is a huge Black Canary fan and cosplayer. She has been very dubious about this movie. I am curious what she thinks now.

I like how the trailer really shows off the ensemble...
Oh.
More seriously though, I do wish we got a sense of what the other Birds of Prey are going to be like, but, yeah. Clearly this is just a Harley picture. Which is fine, but, since I didn't see Suicide Squad, I'm not exactly chomping at the bit to see this movie, and this trailer didn't do much to change that either way.
Maybe positive reviews will get me to see it.

I'm a huge Harley fan, and since she was my favorite part of Suicide Squad I've been very eager for this movie and that looks like a lot of fun.
I do agree that it would have been nice to get more of the other ladies, but this is just the first trailer so hopefully we'll get a better look at the rest of the Birds of Prey in a future trailer or trailers.
And we even saw her getting one of the hyenas!

Looks like a lot of fun. I've always been a fan of Harley, so I'll probably check this out. I'm not really familiar with any of the other characters (other than Renee Montoya) but I understand why their fans would feel miffed if they turn out to be glorified sidekicks to Harley. Hopefully a second trailer will give more emphasis to the rest of them.

Trailer's actually kind of meh, but I'm thinking I'll be seeing this anyway. February tends to be a slow month anyway.

Are they done filming? I know some of these early trailers are done while they are still filming, and that can kind of limit how much footage is usable.

Wrapped in April.
