BIOSHOCK finds a new director

Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) has been assigned to direct the big-screen adaptation of the popular video game BioShock, filing the director's chair vacated by Pirates of the Caribbean helmer Gore Verbinski.

Verbinski, who had been originally developing the film as director, willingly dropped out due to the studio's plan to film abroad which conflicted with his directorial duties on the animated film Rango.

I'm actually kind of thrilled over this news. While Verbinski is a very strong filmmaker (I prefer his quieter films like The Weather Man over his Pirates opuses), Fresnadillo has a very strong visual sense (see Intacto) which BioShock really needs.

The only depressing part? John Logan wrote the script.

We got Max Payne as a cheapo. I can't believe such a strong story was so squandered.

Love BioShock the game. I suspect I'll hate BioShock the movie. I think that BioShock has an amazing story that could be adapted for the big screen easier than other videogame-based projects. However, the simple fact is that 99% of all videogame adaptations turn out to be craptacular movies.

Except for Super Mario Bros. :p

I absolutely loved the introduction and 'fly by' at the beginning of Bioshock. It looked sooooooo wonderful and glamorous and mysterious. In a way the game was a bit of a let down because although the setting was original, the actual gameplay wasn't. If they could capture that fabulousness without the 'this is a spoogeness' it might just be really special.

I liked Silent Hill and the first Mortal Kombat movie. I doubt a hundred video game adaptions has been done so it's not that bad. Of course I still haven't seen either Streetfighter movies or Super Mario Bros yet...

The budget for this movie really doesn't need to get too out of hand. District 9 has shown that an epic Scifi movie can be done with a modest budget.

Bioshock should make for an amazing atmospheric horror movie. I thought 28 Weeks Later looked pretty good.

Would you kindly not make this film?

:rommie:

In all seriousness though, I kind of agree to some extent that a movie might make the setting/story a lot more enjoyable as a viewing experience, but we'll miss the opportunity to actually explore Rapture ourselves, spending time looking over the random graffiti left, listening to the diaries of the crazed inhabitants, spotting the little clues of the places slow descent into dementia...

What's Bioshock? Not trying to be an arse here but I don't really play video games at all. I've heard the name before that's about it.

It's an first person shooter/horror/survival/adventure game. You survive a plane crash in the middle of the Atlantic ocean and find this mysterious lighthouse in the middle of the ocean. Going down you get in a sub that takes you to this amazing decaying underwater city called Rapture, populated by insane genetically enhanced murderers who used to live in a peaceful utopia. The city is this beautiful dark decayed Art Deco utopia under the sea, it's absolutely breathtaking.
