Bioshock 2

My God, this game looks awesome! I haven't played BioShock 1 so.... I'll have to wait on this one until I get the first one.

I'm a relatively new gamer, mostly PC, some arcade. For games like this one, what do you think? Is it better to invest in a system like Xbox or is playing on the computer just as entertaining? Opinions?

Either version should suit you just fine. Many would say that a FPS such as this should only be played with a mouse and keyboard. The only consideration is how good your PC is. If you don't have a decent gaming rig, you may want to invest in a console for stability.

Definitely play the first Bioshock before this. There are plenty of things that are spoiled almost right away in this game.

Speaking of the graphics, I'm surprised that when you walk up to an object it gets all grainy and X-Box 1 looking. I thought 360 games didn't have that problem; I know Halo 3 and Mass Effect 2 didn't. Also, I'm having trouble getting my gun to hit people, but that's probably just my bad aiming.

On top of that having at least one console opens up some options for you as far as gaming is concerned. There are a fair amount of games that you will only be able to play on consoles and vice versa

Of course if you do have a decent PC the game will look and run significantly better than it does on the consoles.

This is new for the second game right; picking up a Little Sister and guarding her while she harvests a corpse? I don't remember doing that. I like the way you get a lot of Adam if you take the time to do this.

I beat the game today. The ending (at least the good one) is beautiful. I had to go to Youtube to look up the evil endings (which are also very well done, and quite scary) because, even in a game, I cannot bring myself to murder children. I just can't.

Yeah :)

I kind of like scouting the environment and setting up traps in bottlenecks and so forth. There are always heaps of options for that and it never seemed to get old.

P.S. I once accidentally shot a splicer with a trap rivet, which stuck to him. When one of his pals walked within its range, it shot him. Tehe.

Aww, god I wish I had the time to go get this game. Been dying to play it. Without reading reviews and what not, is there much difference between the PS3 and 360 versions?

Eurogamer sayeth:
In terms of purchasing decisions for those who own both HD consoles, it's fairly self-evident that the Xbox 360 version of BioShock 2 is the one to have: graphics are undoubtedly superior with four times the resolution on transparencies, the frame-rate is undoubtedly smoother, there's no HDD-sapping mandatory installation and control varies from slightly crisper to considerably more responsive, depending on the status of the PS3's frame-rate at any given point

People who get their knickers in a knot over a tech article have only themselves to blame. Besides, at this point the conclusion that X360 is the superior platform for a multiplatform title is hardly a controversial one.

^^^And that's the problem, the majority of multiplats offer the same game experience on both hardware, but the fanboys wang rubbers do like a poor review on the other console so they can start brow beating people with it as proof that their choice of hardware has somehow been validated, and most of the comparisons will require the user to sit with a microscope at the screen.

And review sites now know this and feel they need to stir up the old hornets nest of fanboy wang rubbing as a sure fire way to get the old hits up on the site, but that's what they do these days, that why i steer clear of most of them and use sites with user reviews.

Such is the world were advertising revenue is linked to the popularity of the site and its hits.

Some of us find such comparisons interesting. They speak to the manner in which developers have approached the challenges posed by the particular platform with the resources they have at hand.

As I implied earlier, nobody is in any need of validation. X360 is the superior platform for the vast majority of multiplatform titles. This is not in question. The whys and wherefores are open to debate, and the details often change, but if all you're interested in is having your console purchase validated wrt multiplatform titles, well, that issue was settled long ago.

For my part, for whatever reason, the vast majority of games I'm interested in on PC, PS3, and Wii are exclusive to each of those platforms. There just aren't many multiplatform titles that interest me. Couple that with my lack of interest in X360's exclusive offerings and it's easy to see why I don't own one.

But that's not what EGDF does. Tell me, other than geeks, which crowd are they attempting to masturbate in this technical analysis of Mass Effect 2, this exploration of the multitude of approaches taken by developers to anti-aliasing across different titles and platforms, or this technical appraisal of the iPad?

I am not about to for one minute get into a detailed pissing match with you over this whole PS3 vs 360 in any way shape or form, i gave my opinion on that review, its nitpicking at issues your average joe public will never know or cares exists, the game looks and play beautifully on all three formats, if some feel the need to dance naked in the dark round a massive pole because another version they will probably never experience has some minor issue they will never encounter then by all means let them dance.:)

I'll chime in and say that I bought it for the PS3...My Xbox 360 is 4 years old so I try to only use it for exclusive titles at this point. The only games I've played on it in the past half a year are Shadow Complex and Mass Effect 2. Anyway, I've been disappointed with how bad the pop in on Bioshock 2 is on the PS3. Would love to hear if it's comparable on the Xbox 360. Quite often when I come across a Big Daddy, he will be walking around untextured for 5-10 seconds, or I'll see a sign and have to wait for the higher res texture to pop in before I can actually read it.

It's certainly not game breaking, I am enjoying the experience of returning to Rapture immensely and highly recommend the game to anyone who enjoyed the first Bioshock...But technically speaking, Bioshock 2 feels unoptimized on the PS3 to me (again, can't speak for the 360).

^^^Texture pop-up is across the board, although if you install the game to the 360 HDD it will minimise it to about a 2/3 onscreen depending on whats going on, which is pretty good considering what the game is throwing around in the graphic department on the console.

But yeah any of these issue certainly wont break the game and should not affect your enjoyment of it on whatever hardware your playing it on.

So... your problem with the article is that it's written for a niche audience?

the game looks and play beautifully on all three formats

Something which the EGDF article notes also.

if some feel the need to dance naked in the dark round a massive pole because another version they will probably never experience has some minor issue they will never encounter then by all means let them dance.:)

I know you're probably sick of this conversation already, but I think your reaction to the article is unduly coloured by the excerpt from the conclusion that I posted earlier. It really should be read in context.

Rii wasn't quoting from the review. You'd know this had you bothered to follow his original link. He was quoting from a side-by-side tech comparison written after the review on a section of the site devoted to such technical boffinry, and in doing so managed to directly answer mr.peany's perfectly fair question.

So what the hell is your problem?
