News Bill and Ted Face the Music Officially Announced

The strangest part of this recasting is that Diane Franklin posted that same day on Twitter a picture of the original ending of Excellent Adventure. The two Princesses attending the Prom with Bill and Ted. Which was retweeted by Ed Solomon co creator of Bill & Ted, writer and producer of all 3 films including the new one.

He knows she is online. She clearly was aware of the recast news. It’s a shame. The Princesses never had much characterization. But that was largely due to recasting the parts for Bogus Journey. Doing so again with younger actresses is not going to help at all.

Complete wishful thinking - with time travel involved could these new actress be playing them in earlier time periods?? They could have all 3 sets of Princesses appear together. Which is a surprise... it’s sounds nice but not holding my breath.

Yeah, that would be cool, but I have a feeling they'd give us some kind of hint to it in the announcements.

Diane Franklin doesn't really seem to do a lot of acting these days.

That's extremely untrue and easily disproven:

Of course it's possible that the actresses were unavailable, but then, why not cast actresses of the same approximate age?

The whole princess angle doesn't really work in a (late) middle-aged context, IMHO. They were in the movie to be adolescent-male-fantasy arm-candy and they can't really serve that role decades later without breaking credulity (not that Bill & Ted stand for credulity). I mean, Marisa Tomei types who defy aging are freaks of nature.

There is a commercial that runs frequently that I am almost has Diane Franklin in it. Drawing a blank right now on the product. I believe it’s for a medication.

I am annoyed whenever fans say “so and so from my childhood no longer works”. Just because it’s roles in things we are not aware of does not mean they are not active. Not everything is a major studio film or tv series. Many actors and actresses spend most of their careers on live stage. I not aware of ever seeing the actress who played Missy in anything else. But I am happy she is back.

EDIT of course the Princesses were an adolescent fanstasy. But so was Missy as the hot stepmom. She is coming back played by the same actress! I imagine they are going to update/ modernize her role in some way without recasting.

So female characters have to be male fantasies or they have no story value?

But I don't see where they really need to be playing at that role at this point, they're wives and mothers to daughters who are in their late teens or twenties, so we've should have moved beyond that by now.

Hasn't aged a day my ass. He looks fantastic. Don't get me wrong, but he's certainly aged, & hasn't spent nearly as much effort in trying not to as Tom Cruise has. That said... eeee… it could be fun

While I see why he lost the beard for this. I'm wondering if maybe a bit of stubble or scruff might have worked as well... or dare I say it... stayed with the continuity? lol

Fragile, incel man babies strike again. This time it seems that changing Bill and Ted's children from boys to girls is "forced diversity" and "box office poison." (it's worth noting that the same people who are calling this move "box office poison" are the same people who thought Captain Marvel was going to tank.) Screenwriter Ed Solomon quicklyshot the morons down.

I saw Ed Solomon’s response to that earlier today. His posts on Twitter are great, very insightful.

It’s not surprising they are making the characters Bill and Ted’s daughters. Regardless of when this movie got made. Lets say in theory even if it got made shortly after Bogus Journey. The problem with two sons is that they would have seemed like copies of their Dads no matter what. Or polar opposites, which is a cliche too. Daughters allow them to be their own uniques, regardless of level of similarities or differences to their fathers.

He also revealed that most of the jokes in the Bogus Journey end credits were created by the company who did the credits not the actual writers. They are ingoring that stuff. Which is a relief.... no air guitar did not eliminate Smog, etc, etc!

I had to refresh my memory on that stuff. Yeah, I don't see all that stuff really fitting in with their plans for the third movie. I do love that Missy was supposed to be married to Denomolos, though.

Hopefully they don't pull too far back from that stuff though, you can alienate an audience by ignoring too much stuff from the previous movies. The magazine gags can (thankfully) be mostly be glossed over as a mix of tabloid garbage, poor reporting, hyperbole, and dare I say it...fake news.

Wyld Stallyns is well established to be crucial to a wonderful future though, so hopefully they don't crap too hard on the "legacy" of the band in the new film. And I wonder if they really did make Bill & Ted: The Movie like Premiere reported. :)

Audiences today (at least the fraction of them who post most vocally online) are too hypersensitive to that sort of thing. Most movie series throughout history have blithely ignored or contradicted past continuity on a regular basis and still thrived -- Frankenstein, Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, Godzilla, Planet of the Apes, Pink Panther, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Highlander, etc.

Continuity is nice to have, but the tendency today to treat it as the exclusive test of quality, as some holy writ whose slightest violation renders the entire work invalid, is misguided and harmful. Stories are just make-believe. We know they're unreal but choose to pretend that they aren't. Continuity helps sell the illusion, but without it, we still have the power to pretend, to suspend disbelief and shrug off an inconsistency for the sake of enjoying the story.

I was a little too young to see either movie in theaters. Not because of lack of interest but I did not control what I could see. If I had asked to see Bogus Journey, being a fan of the first from tv and video, my Dad probably would have taken me. But with so many movies I do not think it occurred to me. We went to movies often but not every week. These are definitely movies I was a fan built on at home viewing.

For many years my memories of Bogus Journey were tainted by those end credit jokes. It seemed such a quick and lazy way of resolving things. But a few years ago I watched it again and had forgotten how great the rest of the movie is. It reminds of Gremlins 2 in willing to do a completely different type of story and not repeat the first movie.

So I am very happy they are mostly ignoring that stuff. None of that stuff actually involves the real characters. All those news headlines show publicity photos of the characters from the two films. They do not age. Not much effort was put into it. Maybe it will be revealed as a fanfilm posted on the Internet. That is mistaken for the real thing many years later in the future.
