All of this talk above, about UPN not wanting VOY to have arcs for fear of alienating the casual fans, leads me to believe that Paramount should have simply stopped bothering to try and recruit the non-fans a long time ago. Star Trek, and its fans, is so ingrained in its ways by now. It's nearly impossible to try and attract a new audience these days. Hell, it can barely keep hold of the fans it already has. ENT lost tonnes of ST fans, even hardcore Trekkies!
The new film, for all their trying to finally win over the casuals, might not succeed. I don't think we'll be seeing a 'Voyage Home', 'TNG', or 'First Contact' level of crossover mainstream popularity ever again. It's too late for that.
