Big Finish closing the costuming gap between Eight and Nine?

The Doctor will carry a bag when Julian Clary gets the role.
mine is an over the shoulder, across the chest jobbie. Handbags have always seemed ineffecient to me, given that you loose the use of one hand.

also you are more likely to put a handbag down, than you are something over the shoulder, putting it down may result in you leaving it behind

I dont understand people.

This "new" costume reminds me of (especially the photo of him infront of the white wall) one of those prats who takes their laptop in a man bag to Starbucks or some other trendy coffee place to sponge off their free Wi-Fi access.

I do this... but I don't have a coat like that. Am I still a prat?

In any case, they should just switch from using stock photos of McGann from the TV movie to stock photos of McGann from the Hornblower series. Why wouldn't the Doctor suddenly start wearing Napoleonic-era British naval uniforms?

With the TIME WAR you would probably see The Doctor change as a person so the costume change would make sense though it still maybe should look a little more different than 9th's, but nice idea anyway.

Bloody Big Finish. The 8th Doctor's costume is well established, and they're only bloody audio anyway. You don't want the 8th Doctor looking like the 9th because they're different bloody Doctors. Pertwee didn't put on a long scarf for his last season.

I agree, pretty much.

They might have been better just doing slight variations on the original costume, like they did with Pertwee & Tom...But the leather jzcket & short hair? Seems to me like BF are just pandering to McGann's wishes (in interviews done after 2005 he has on occaision revealed he wished he'd had Eccleston's look).

I think it was pure speculation it was BFs idea - he is in New Zealand for a convention, and has been on record as saying he'd have liked a costume a bit more like Chris' So someone may have made him one, in the hope he'd do more photos.

I really can't imagine BF comissioning a coat, letting Paul take it with him (unfinished) to New Zealand! When he's at an event in the UK in two weeks.

being stuck using the same half-a-dozen photos over and over.

There's a lot more than that! They've actually reused very few in ten years, or resorted to screengrabs that often. It's just we are over familar with a lot of them. They've reused Davison images more often infact!

This "well known hatred" is a complete myth.
He's certainly mentioned loathing the wig on stage.

Regeneration clips are the worst. How many times do we have to see Davison's "Oh this is it......i'm regenerating!"

Or the 8th door rising from the table.

It is uncanny...I think its the high vis jacket, the helmet and the coal dust on Eccleston's face that makes it... :)

As for the 8th Doctor's new look...isn't it a bit late in the day for this? I can see what they're going for, there's a definite Jules Verne Journey to the Centre of the Earth vibe to it, but the coat looks cheap, it seems a big jump from his original look, and worst of all crikey McGann looks rough! Least Eccleston used to shave ;)

Well it seems you need to be educated in society and who fits into what groups because you always seem to get it wrong. Reading the Daily Mail will do that to a person.

Which screams The 90's to me! That's why it works so well for his Doc (to me). ;)

I'd hate for him to become a miner from down the pit like Eccleston.

You know Sci is going to have a field day with this comment....
:guffaw:

Don't be absurd. It's a thread about a pre-RTD Doctor appearing in audio adventures; it took me three days to even bother to read it. ;)

It's the popped collar that does it.

^Yep, pure late-90's-to-2004 look. Which is, chronologically, perfect for his Doctor... :techman:

Ha! So, what do you think of the look, Sci?

I don't like it. To me, it looks too influenced by the Ninth Doctor's look. I don't object to the idea of the Eighth Doctor finding a different look than he had in the TV movie, but I've always liked the idea that when the Doctor regenerates, he usually completely changes his look to reflect how different he feels.

If that's what the Eighth Doctor looked like when he regenerated, then that implies that he basically went from feeling like wearing purple to feeling like wearing black. That's the sort of change a person goes through from day to day, not the sort of change you go through when you've grown a new body. So I tend to think that if they're going for a new look for Eight, it shouldn't be one that's influenced by the look they used for Nine.

Wow, see, I don't see the whole 9th Doctor comparison any more than I do when people say Ten and Eleven are dressed similar. Sure, they both like brown. Okay. But, then again, here it's just they both like leather-ish jackets. I don't get the fuss. Everyone loves Ten wearing sneakers like Five. Or Eleven wearing a bowtie like Two. What's wrong with Nine wearing a jacket made of the same material as the one he (might) have wore as Eight? If nothing else, for me, it's convincing that both incarnations had something to do during that dark period. Eight became rough-and-tumble from war, but Nine became dark and injured from ending the war. Love it.

Well, this is completely subjective, but I'd say that leather jackets are so distinctive a category that variations on the look aren't enough to really set one Doctor's look apart from another. I know they're trying to make them distinct, but the over-riding aspect of the looks for both Eight and Nine is "leather jacket." They're just too powerful -- the fact that it's a leather jacket dominates everything else about the look.

By contrast, I think that Eleven's tweed jacket and bow tie are distinctive enough that they set his look apart from Ten's pinstripe business suits, even though they both make use of brown. Tweed and pinstripe register to me as sufficiently distinct looks that I don't end up comparing them too much.

Sure, they both like brown. Okay. But, then again, here it's just they both like leather-ish jackets. I don't get the fuss.

Eh, I'm not fussing. I don't listen to the Big Finish audios, after all. But you asked me what I thought, so I answered. No hostility intended. :bolian:

Well, I think the thing that makes those examples work and which doesn't work for Eight and Nine is that Eight and Nine are consecutive, whereas there were four incarnations of the Doctor between Five and Ten and eight incarnations between Two and Eleven. I think you can repeat aspects of a look, but you should have several regenerations between them. Like I said, I like the idea that the Doctor just completely changes himself when he gets a new body -- if it's two incarnations in a row that wear a leather jacket, that just feels like it's too much and doesn't adequately reflect how the Doctor has changed.

Oh you!

Seriously though, give it up. I'm starting to feel bad for you.
Did you go to the bother of making that? How sweet!

I know, it took me five whole minutes but, you know what, you're worth it Bones
