Big Brother (UK) Cancelled - Series 11 will be its last

I still have last nights sky plussed waiting to be watched.

Ooh, there was a big fight between Siavash and Charlie, excellent.

It was good to see Charlie exposed as the knobhead he is (again), but I still want Siavash out so Marcus stays and wins next week's final.

This news isn't really a surprise, it's been expected for a while and it's been pretty obvious this series that Channel 4 want rid of BB.

It'll be back one day. Relaunched and bigger then ever!
Maybe Ron Moore can come along in a few years and do a reimagining of Big Brother. He'll make everyone's life miserable for four months until they all break down and shoot themselves in the head. I still wouldn't watch it, but I would appreciate the fact that it is killing off the sort of people that apply to appear on Big Brother.

You've probably heard the news that the final ever Big Brother will air next summer. But wipe away that tear! The end of BB means more money for new drama - so there will be more stuff like Skins and Shameless, but also a whole batch of new shows, like Misfits which will be coming to E4 this November.
If you haven’t already heard about Misfits, it’s our latest drama series about a bunch of ASBO kids who develop weird superpowers after they are caught in a freak storm. But Heroes this ain’t. Nathan, Curtis, Alisha, Simon and Kelly aren’t exactly gonna be saving the world and they won’t be swapping their Reebok classics and ankle tags for capes and tights just yet. They soon realise that life’s not easy when you’re all that stands between good and evil… well, that and your curfew order.

Skins and Shameless will return in January, along with The Inbetweeners later next year and there are more new comedy drama series like these in the pipeline too.

Over on Channel 4, Shane Meadows - the writer/director behind This is England - will be making a drama just for TV. That’s a first! All the main characters from This Is England (Shaun, Gadget, Woody, Lol...) will return. Oh yeah, it's also set in 1986 which can only mean one thing: AWESOME 80s soundtrack!

There's not a single word in this post that doesn't make me happy. Well, maybe Shameless should call it a day soon (admittedly I'm still annoyed about last series' finale death :(), but otherwise hurray!

As for Big Brother... well I didn't even realise it was on this year until last year. Last time I heard about this wreck of a programme was when that woman who looks like a Pikachu was on it. That could have been last year or 1999. I won't know the difference. Or care. Good riddance.

I don't really watch much TV these days apart from reruns and films, so I can't I care too much about this decision one way or another. But I do miss the glory days of BB. The first season was really great.

I kept watching for years after that, but they never recaptured that first season magic where the housemates didn't really know how big the show was. Still OK entertainment for some years after, but never as good as the first season.

Having said that, "Fight Night" in season five was probably the Jump the Shark moment for the series. Awesome, awesome night (the best single BB night of them all), but the last BB high point and that was the last season I watched through. Victor from that year was the best housemate ever, and made a hilarious double-act with Jason*. Complete knob, in a very very funny and likeable way. Nasty Nick second best. In fact, I think they're probably the only housemates whose names I can remember without prompting, which says something.

* just googled up some lolworthy Victor quotes... :guffaw:

More shows like Skins? Dear God, how many shows of drunken annoying chavs do we need on tv?

I just want to reiterate, as I do in every thread that mentions the UK Big Brother, that the US version is not nearly as bad as the UK one. Having seen both, they are actually quite different. The UK version seems all about the soap opera like social interactions, and the US version is much more about game strategy, like Survivor but in a house.

I think that these different styles are reflected in the ratings. The US version's ratings have been going up while the UK's have been going down. I don't think it means the beginning of the end of reality TV, but it does indicate what has been most successful with audiences and what future reality shows might look like.

It was cancelled in Australia last year. As far as I can tell, no one misses it. And the 'stars' from it are rapidly sinking. Long may this be a continuing trend.

I like Skins, but took "like Skins" to mean slightly off kilter comedy/drama, not shows about 17 year old's constantly having sex, drugs and drinks.

Hey the end of an era, BB worldwide signified the celeb culture at its most grotesque and defined the lamentable 00s obsession with fame and not the abandonment of coolness, style and class in this respect. Now we can get back to the cool 90s, I mean we've had an 80s revival but now its time to bring back 90s rock, the next pulp fiction, pepsi max and to the extreme!
