Even if nothing happened off-screen, is it really that egregious? In a more realistic world, I can't see the Penny/Leonard relationship getting past stilted occasional 30-second hallway conversations with 1 failed attempt to ask her out. She wouldn't give that annoying <bleep> Sheldon the time of day, probably have to threaten Howard with a restraining order if he ever talked to her again, and Raj would never be more than some guy who visits her neighbor since he can't talk to women. Is Penny's change of heart less realistic than the fact that she was ever friends with any of them at all?
The Leonard and Penny relationship never seemed plausible to me, there was never any chemistry between them. Oddly enough, she always seemed to me to be a better match for Sheldon than Leonard. Penny could have helped make Sheldon more human, Sheldon could have helped Penny realize her potential.

yet the two actors dated in real life....

There is no universe in the multiverse where Penny and Sheldon are any type of match (besides as friends or any other combination but romantic).

That's not quite true.

I thought the finale was terrific. It gave these characters a good ending without going so overboard that there couldn't be another season if they wanted it. Not that they do, but it's somewhat realistic that there wouldn't be massive life changing events for everyone.

Yes, Penny is having a baby. It was an accidental pregnancy and they chose to not only keep it, but see it for the blessing it is. She was happy. A happy ending is not something to complain about.

This isn't How I Met Your Mother, which was one of the worst finales I have ever seen.

And it was better than Game of Thrones, which to me was decent, but not great. BBT went out well.

1. I didn't think that Penny changed her mind about having children. She accidentally became pregnant, and she decided that she wanted THAT child. They might never have any more. It was only a situational change.
2. The pill sometimes fails if the woman takes antibiotics for awhile.
3. I would never trust a man when he said he was on "the man pill". Nope! It would be too important to leave to anyone else. Thank goodness I don't have to worry about birth control anymore.
