Wasn't there a book or other story from a long time ago that had the Master "rescuing" Adric right before the explosion and sort of brainwashing him?
I can't find any reference now.

Sorry, that's not canon . Adric's true fate is revealed by episode five of Earthshock, as featured as an Easter Egg on the DVD.

He survives the crash (but is somehow converted to playmation form in the process), but gets squashed by the foot of a very big dinosaur.
