Beyond Good and Evil 2

Development now officially confirmed. About bloody time too!
Has it really been 8 years since they teased this thing? Why does everything make me feel old these days and what are those damn kids doing in my lawn!?

Not sure how representative this old concept footage is anymore, but lets just hope the similarities to Assassin's Creed begins and ends with the parkour. I'd hate to see this game turn out with a thin story padded out with repetitive and hollow sidequests, some variation of radio tower claiming in a big empty open world.

In other news, in an astonishing coincidence that's probably not a coincidence at all; in a few days time Ubisoft are giving the original away for free as part of their ongoing 30th anniversary thing. The catch is that it's only on UPlay...

Already posted this over on the 'Free Games' thread, but it seems more relevant here somehow:
Beyond Good and Evil is currently free on Uplay. During it's announcement, the game's creator Michel Ancel seemed to hint at a new easter egg of some kind near the end of the game.
I just spent the last week playing though the game and got to the space section mentioned above just last night...and so far I can't find what he's talking about. Flew clean around the planet several times and nothing but some very low-res textures. Either I'm missing something, or I'm not properly understanding his meaning.

Well, this was a surprise.

That's quite a departure in tone and content and apparently a prequel to boot. How much do you want to bet this is the last we hear of it for the next six years? ;)

Oh my god I literally screamed when I saw those eyes. Ubi seriously has the best presentation up until now. It wouldn't surprise me if they'd be called this year's winner.

Finally... My body is ready!

Wow, that was an amazing trailer. If the game is even half that good, I'd be thrilled.

For a second I thought that disc had a code for the original game written on it, but on closer inspection it just says "System 4", which IIRC is where Hillys is.
Other random observations: -
That crew appears to include one of the mammago Rhinos, rasta hat and all.
The idol is called "Pey-Jin The Redeemer". Just a nod to Pey'j, or is there more to it?

They said that this takes place before Jade's birth, so it's a fair bet those eyes belong to her "mother" (still not 100% clear on how that all worked, but I guess we'll see in this game maybe?)

Yeah I know, but those eyes still had the desired effect; Ancell knows this.

Well this is novel. A trailer breakdown by Ancel himself:

Noticed a few more details too: -
A poster featuring that young Pey'j concept art from a while ago
A billboard for mammago garage (featuring a Barranco D53!)
A billboard advertising a deathmatch between two hybrids, a Rhino called Capo & a Walrus(?) named Razer.
A box of k-bubs!

Interesting to get an explanation for all the anthropomorphised animals: genetic hybrids created to serve as a slave class. Pretty dark considering the tone of the original, but then that was always deceptively light given the actual subject matter.

Assuming this is a prologue to the game's plot, I'm guessing the goal from the outset is going to be to escape the oppression in system 3 and find a way to system 4. I'm guessing that object in the map is some kind of ancient jump-gate of some description?

The BG&E2 website is up, and while it doesn't have a ton of info it does gives names and brief descriptions for all of the characters we see in the trailer, and identifies the city as Ganesha, named after the Indian god who is worshiped by the hybrids.
Edit: I'm very curious where they are going to go with the story and characters in the Insomniac Spidey game, since this is apparently in it's own separate universe. I love their costume, it's different, but still recognizably Spider-Man.

Interesting that they're using the name Shani considering Jade's codename (also, possibly real name?) was Shauni. It raises the question of whether there's a connection because the names are very similar but also why are they different? On the one hand Shani is Saturn in Hindu astrology and apparently a bad omen, while Shauni is just the female version of Shaun, which is itself just a different pronunciation of boring old "John" and means either "gift of god" or "god is gracious", or both?

Interestingly interesting as well as also is that the one we're all assuming is Jade's "mother" (because: eyes) is called Dakini, which is the name of a type of spirit in Buddhist mythology (think: Valkyrie, but with less mead and wings and more moodswings).

Seems like there's some subtext there since we know Jade is at least partly divine (or your nearest space-magic equivalent) and was entrusted (or "given"?) to Pey'j by her parents who where in some unspecified trouble. I'm sure it'll make more sense once we know more...or not. The first game was notoriously heavy on implication, but light on details.

And this is why one must be careful while editing posts with multiple tabs open. ;)

Interesting. I'm already trying to decide if I'll go with cat person or goat person as my player character... ;)

I really hope they can actually pull this off, it sounds incredible.

Another year, another E3 video.

So it looks like previous reports of this being much earlier in the timeline seem to have been incorrect...or they changed their minds since then (the game is still very much in the conceptual phase.) I'm sure there's lots of little Easter eggs hidden in there that I'll have to go looking for another day, but for now I'm just happy to see they're still moving forward on the game!

Wait wasn't Jade the main hero of the first game? Did she change sides somewhere between the games or are we following bad guys here?
I think I need to replay the first one. I tried it back when it first came out, but at the time I was fairly young and I got bored with it pretty quickly.

Yes, she was and yes you do. It's an awesome little game that should take too long to get through. You can usually find it pretty cheap on Steam or GOG. In fact I think GOG have it on sale right now.

Not sure if matters have changed, but the word was last year that this was to the a prequel. Not sure if that's stiil the case given the presence of an old-ish Pey'j and what looks like a late teen, or early 20's Jade.
The impression one got from the first game was that Pey'j brought Jade to Hillis at a young age (she appears to have no memory of her parents--who are referred to--or any life before the lighthouse.)
Of course we don't actually know what Jade really is, only that she's not exactly human was taken from the Domz and is very important to them. Perhaps she doesn't age and part of what they did to get her away from the Domz wiped her memory?

Or maybe they just changed their minds and went with a sequel after all.
