Bewitched Was A Classic TV Master Class in Abusive Relationships

^ True dat.

It's like in DW, when we've seen many examples of a Time Lord (or Lady) marrying a human. Leela and Andred, Susan and whoever the hell the guy was...one of them's going to live centuries longer than the other. Can't imagine that ending well.

I guess it's like Tom Paris marrying Kes and then Harry Kim marrying Tom's daughter, making Harry Tom's son-in-law...

I love Bewitched. Just sayin'.

One could argue it was a master class in racism. Endora hated Darrin on principle that he was a mortal before she even met him. And never disguised her loathing. She tried to keep him away from Samantha on their wedding night. She never addressed him by his proper name. She frequently put him down and put him permanently on the defensive. She relentlessly demonstrated her contempt. He was always uneasy in her presence. I don't blame him for his discomfort and resentment. It was a sweet moment when they bonded over Tabitha's birth; sadly it was short-lived.

Darrin's own prejudice against witches erupted when he found himself on the receiving end of Endora's spiteful interference. He tried to make sense of Sam's powers, and initially wasn't severely freaked out. It depressed him that he felt he couldn't act as provider and protector if all Sam had to do was wriggle her nose to achieve a result. So he buried himself in his work. And entrenched himself in the familiar and normal world of work and bills. In his own way he tried to prove himself to her. Witchcraft was completely outside his life experience. He was a successful advertising consultant whose own witch wife tried to sell a campaign of normal marriage to the husband who could sell anything. That she was unable to do so reflects only that she lacked her husband's skill in salesmanship. And that the product of their evenly balanced relationship was simply beyond his scope to imagine.

Despite how and where she was was raised, Leela is an advanced Future Human, and the recipient of thousands of years worth of genetic engineering to make her "safe" from anything life might want to throw at her.

She "could" outlive a Time Lord.

In the audio universe, Leela had to deal with Andred regenerating maybe three times. Living on Gallifrey (in the audio books) extended her youth, which slipped away quickly when she went off planet.

DAVID is not just an ordinary human who married a Time Lady. He is a victim of 10 years of Dalek plague and atomic fall out. I doubt David will make it to 30, or live to see Susan regenerate into the Master.

Darrin was offered to become a witch several times. He's always rejected it, although he was sometimes tempted for a short time. I guess it would also have made him an immortal as well but apparently, he's not tempted by immortality (or a very long life at any rate).

Did Darrin and Endora ever reach any sort of rapprochement? Given the nature of the series my guess is there wasn't any sort of conclusion along those lines, but it would be nice to think they reached some level of understanding eventually. The bickering may have been fun for audiences of the time, but even as a kid I found it kinda horrible.

Really? I didn't know that was possible.

He's always rejected it, although he was sometimes tempted for a short time. I guess it would also have made him an immortal as well but apparently, he's not tempted by immortality (or a very long life at any rate).

Since it would have enabled him to live with Samantha forever (sparing her the pain of losing him at his otherwise inevitable death), I'm forced to wonder why Darrin would have turned it down...

This thread got way more heated than I would have imagined.

Listen, interpreting Bewitched as a show about emotional abuse is completely legitimate. Interpreting it as a show about mixed marriages but not abuse is completely legitimate. Most texts can be interpreted as having different meanings based upon the weight different audience member give to different elements. An interpretation you strongly disagree with can still be valid and thoughtful, and the idea that such an interpretation must be "stupid" is unreasonable.

Anyway, there are better things to get angry about. Like whether or not I Dream of Jeannie perpetuates a toxic version of BDSM. ;)

Longer life span = a slower less intense biological clock/sex drive.

An infinite lifespan = No biological clock/sex drive.

Mortals F%%%.

I don't think so. All my friends who have children, wanted them.

Your friends are lying.

Try telling a kild that they are an unwanted mistake that ruined your life. It's mean and unnecessary, and they'll never give you another Christmas present ever.

Psychos that go through ivf are the exception. 20 thousand per attempt because you're to much of an asshole to adopt? First World problems.

Gays that want children? 100 percent choice and no sccidents

Did some googling for numbers

1.2 million unwanted pregnancies per year in America, of which only 70 percent are aborted, so in America there are 360,000 unplanned births that are born.

That number is about documented unplanned births. Most people just say “fuck it" and never check in with the abortionist.

3.5 million babies are born in America, so the actual number of unplanned, should have been aborted the little shits is %10.

Google is lying.

Every one is lying.

Children are awful and you have to be almost brain damaged to think otherwise.

Go watch a season of Teen Mom.

Your friends are lying.
.....

I am talking of good friends that I had known for a long time. I know which ones wanted children and which didn't. Those who didn't and still had them had wives who very much wanted children and I saw them change their minds. The few that didn't want children never had them. Unwanted pregnancies among well-educated mature people are very rare.

The only thing equal to 100% is death. We're all going to die.

So again, why didn't Darrin take the bait when he was offered to be made a warlock (assuming that offer was genuine)? Is there somethng he would have had to give up in return?

I mean, if he becomes a warlock, he'd presumably live forever*, so he would basically have an immortal relationship with Samantha. Why wouldn't he want that? And as I said, it would spare her the pain of losing him, although I guess we can assume she'd already prepared herself for that eventuality when she married Darrin.

* Assuming witches and warlocks do in fact live forever in this universe, when do they stop aging? I mean, it's not like Adam and Tabitha would remain children for eternity...
