Better Than I Remember

The Boy Who Cried Worf

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I started watching the TOS films, and I've gotten to #3. I'm not sure I've seen this film since it first came out. I always remembered not liking it at all, hating that they blew up the Enterprise, and thinking it was the worst of the lot. Well I'd still put it in 5th place, but it is much closer to 4th place and no where near as the God awful TFF. Much more enjoyable than I'd remembered.

A few nitpicks:
The Vulcan's were endowed with a little too much mysticism for my tastes, and the story itself is kind skimpy for a whole movie.

I could have done without McCoy in the bar

You'd think a matter like a Katra would be really important to the Vulcans, and they'd exert a little pressure on Starfleet to give Kirk a ship.

Some positives though
23rd century Klingons were so bad-assed, and Christopher Lloyd may have been the most bad-assed of them all.

I kept thinking it would be really hot if Saavik "helped" Spock through his Pon Farr. I forgot that it was heavily implied she did. If it had still been Kirstie Alley "hottest scene ever".

"Klingon bastards, you killed my son".

What I liked about ST3: Nimoy did a great job of directing Shatner. He really got Shatner to 'underact' for once and not be hammy. I remember reading a bit about this at the time, how Nimoy would get the Shat to refilm scenes or re-deliver lines.

It's not my favorite Trek movie, but it would be about 3rd or 4th as well.

I thought it was Nick Meyer who did that on Wrath of Khan? He talks in the audio commentary on the DVD about having Shatner do take after take until he was almost bored with it — by that point, the performance was coming across far less hammy, and it usually ended up being the one he used.
