Better Call Saul, the TV series

I'm still surprised, all things considered, that Cliff didn't smell a rat. He knew better than anyone what Jimmy was capable of. I guess it was the involvement of Kim that made him believe.

And not that I want to heap blame on Kim here but lest we forget, Jimmy would have backed out at several points if Kim hadn't pushed him on.

Yeah, if I had one complaint about the final episodes it would be how we didn't get to see Cliff's reaction to the truth about Howard, Saul, and Kim.

I mean, if Kim hadn't pushed Saul then Howard would still be alive, Kim wouldn't have left Saul, Saul wouldn't have become the man that would encourage Walt to continue his work, Saul wouldn't have changed his statement and ended up with a long prison sentence.

Well Lalo would have still turned up at their apartment I guess and that trauma might still have been enough to trip her over the edge into walking away from Jimmy.

The true tragedy of their relationship is that Kim was wrong. They weren't poison for each other. Jimmy was poison for Kim certainly, but Kim's presence made Jimmy a somewhat better man.

The real poison for Jimmy was his brother. Growing up with someone who looks down at you and thinks your never going to be a good person likely played a role in that becoming somewhat true.

KIm did make him a better man but I guess one could say that her desire to have fun and be rebellious was bad for him because it's kind of like giving a alcoholic a drink. It opens up instincts in him that he has to control and lots of that control is because he loved Kim.

I’m not sure Kim really made Jimmy a better man. She made him want to be one to prove he was worthy of her, but in the end, wolf’s gonna wolf. And Jimmy was nowhere near as ambitious with his schemes without Kim, he ripped off losers at bars for a few hundred bucks at a time. Jimmy argued back against destroying Howard’s career.

It’s hard to guess what would have happened with Kim if Howard didn’t die. Might not have left him. But it feels like they would have hurt someone eventually.

I also thought it was left ambiguous whether Jimmy ever could have become a normal lawyer if Chuck embraced him. Years of watching his father get rolled by grifters set him on a path, made him feel the constant need to trick and dominate. By that time, Chuck may have been able to keep him honest for a while, but eventually he would have needed to bend the rules.

I don't think Jimmy would have ever been a regular lawyer. He would have always been a huckster type but I don't think maybe he would have gotten into the big stuff like working with Water White and the criminal underground.

That's the probably the most likely scenario. A supportive Chuck might not have prevented him from breaking the rules and being colorful but he would have prevented him from going so extreme.

For Chuck to be supportive to Jimmy, he would have needed to stay in Chicago instead of going away to study law, in order to have a healthy relationship with him.. There's quite an age difference. A healthy relationship may require them not being in lawyering, but completely different lives starting in Chicago.

We also don't know what things were like for their father when Chuck was a young boy. He may not have been taken advantage of others until after Chuck went away to college, or Chuck would have noticed.

They were two fucked up souls...the moment Chuck went away and studied Law.

Also, I always wondered...why didn't Chuck practice law in Chicago??

I don't think it would be a healthy relationship if he had quit all his dreams just to be close to Jimmy. A healthy relationship would be Chuck living his own life, being there for Jimmy when he needs him and supporting his efforts to change.

That’s bull. Chuck would have gone nuts, ruined his relationship with his ex, without Jimmy around. He had issues already.

See my last question. I think Chuck ran away from problems he needed to work on. We will never know.

For Chuck and Jimmy to both go bad in their different ways you got to wonder what amount blames goes towards the parents. We know the dad was a good person in terms of wanting to help people but I wonder if maybe they weren't emotionally supportive or something or maybe they had issues that we never saw.

Would he? His problems seemed to come from his issues with Jimmy. If he wasn't so uptight about Jimmy becoming a lawyer, he probably would have never progressed so far in his condition.

Lawyering was the only thing that made Chuck happy, he's not beholden to his brother who at the point all he knew was he was stealing from the cash registers to give up on his dreams. And Jimmy wouldn't have wanted that for him either, he loved that Chuck was such a great lawyer. Chuck's only mistake was not supporting Jimmy after he was trying to reform.

The show received five Emmy nominations (series, Odenkirk, Seehorn, and two episodes for writing). Sadly, Last of Us and Succession completely locked down the Best Guest Actress in a Drama category so no love for Carol Burnett. Bastards.

Seehorn has a small chance of actually winning: The White Lotus has, count them, five nominees in the category, and there are only two other actresses in the category. So it's possible The White Lotus will split the vote and Seehorn will finally get the long overdue recognition she deserves.

But I'm not holding my breath.

This is the same year they decided to inexplicitly move Last Week Tonight to the Best Variety Sketch show alongside SNL and A Black Lady Sketch Show.

Seehorn better win.

As for Melanie Lynskey: I haven't had a chance to watch Yellowjackets yet. My mother's raved about it. I thought her turn in TLOU was good enough, but I'm surprised it's been deemed nomination-worthy. Happy to support a fellow Kiwi and all. Still ...
