Better Call Saul, the TV series

Giancarlo Esposito would love to make a prequel about Gus' time in Chile.

"I've always kept these [Breaking Bad] pillars in my head, as much as I've wanted so much as an actor to explore Gus's previous life — Gus' life in Chile, all these things," he says. So now, even though his two-show ride as Gus is over, "there is a yearning inside me, and I keep coming back to the Rise of Gus," the actor shares. "It fits the puzzle, and we could see where he had come from and maybe explore more of who he really is underneath the mask. [Gould and Gilligan] have exactly said that — it's not over till it's over, and you never know. I totally believe that they should take a break. It's an intense world to live in for a while. And they both have skills in other areas and should tell those stories too. But I'm not averse to one day coming back to him. I just hope if that is supposed to happen, that it's sometime before I'm 90."

It would be interesting, but they'd definitely need to use de-aging tech if they didn't do it in the very near future.

Also I think it'd work better as a one of ala El Camino rather than as a series.

I have no interest in seeing a gus backstory or anyone else's backstory.

I feel its been wrapped up nicely and no further spin offs or stories need to be told.

I would do the Gus prequel as a movie. Personally I think it would be more fun to do a story about staff of his Los Pollos Hermanos Chicken joint and even though we know he has this criminal stuff with drugs going on we only get small glimpses of that because the show is being told from the POV of the employees. Mostly when we see him it's just as the boss and also important man of community which we saw on Breaking Bad.

I agree a mini-series might be the best route if Giancarlo Esposito is to reprise the role, which I don't have a problem with. Considering the returns of Jesse Plemons and Aaron Paul, or even Bob Odenkirk and Esposito himself, the show doesn't worry too much about appearances not matching up and I'm fine with that.

Now if they cast a younger actor actor to play Gus with Esposito narrating or something, then I could see a full series working.

Since I’m bad at making memes: Imagine the Steve Buscemi meme with Giancarlo Esposito’s head saying “Greetings fellow Chilean youths”.

Also wouldn’t everyone be speaking Spanish?
Didn't stop characters in various tv shows and movies speaking English in places where they shouldn't be speaking English....including alien worlds where nobody had heard of Earth....

That hasn’t been the case in this universe. It’s been a universe with no dreams, no ghost conversations, and only showing matter of fact events, without needing a layer of cinematic abstraction.

Surely the characters in Mexico, with no US citizens, would have been speaking Spanish....? unless the subtitles have been BSing me?

They do often speak Spanish when there isn't an English speaker in the conversation. They do that thing where they speak a few sentences in Spanish then find some reason to switch to English.

It just wouldn't feel right in the Breaking Bad universe to go full Schindler's List.

I finished BCS tonight after spending a month+ rewatching Seasons 1-4 and then watching 5 and 6. That was a great series, but I think I will always remember the scene where Kim is sobbing on the bus as the stand out scene of the series for me. Kim became my favorite character on this series, and just as she saved Jimmy from Lalo, I loved that Jimmy saved her and let her be a Lawyer again. Whatever Gilligan and Seehorn have down the pipe I will watch it. I might even watch Odenkirk's new show next year too. Still, in the last two years I watched the Breaking Bad Universe and I'm glad I did. That's a franchise done extremely well.
