Better Call Saul, the TV series

I've enjoyed watching the interaction between Mike and Gus. He clearly saw something in Mike early on. He defers to Mike - from overseeing the superlab to handling Werner - that's not something Gus would do lightly. Was it his intent to draw him in from the outset, knowing what a valuable asset Mike and his particular skill-set would be going forward? But also knowing Mike had to cross that line himself, which he did when he killed Werner.

And Jimmy. When he said "I'll never be as good as Chuck... but I can try.", I knew he was punking us. Then, so completely wrapped up in his win he didn't see how floored Kim was.

We know full well where Jimmy-now-Saul ends up, but the fate of Kim is the big ???. I don't think she'll be killed off and I don't think she'll last the distance with Saul. But I do like the idea of Kim resurfacing in Gene's life.

I read that the showrunners want to make it about the same length as BB for the symmetry.

It would make me so happy if they did a third series about Jesse’s new life, trying to have a normal family but being in hiding. Make it a Star Wars style trilogy.

Can picture it. Jesse finds out his wife is pregnant, they are discussing baby names, and his wife suggests “Walter”. He freezes for a second, freaks out, starts yelling about some old fight they had and runs out in panic.

That was gut wrenching on several levels. I knew Werner was going to have to die, any other outcome would have felt like a narrative cheat, still Mike's crossed a line now, as has Jimmy. I bought the speech as well, at least at first, and it was good writing to include Jimmy's breakdown in the car as well because that helped sell it to the audience. The look on Kim's face though...

The karaoke scene was good, and as @Evil Headhunter said I was waiting for something horrible to happen but thankfully it never did. Although...interesting to note that Chuck couldn't allow them to share a moment in the spotlight, he had to take over and push Jimmy to the back of the stage. That was very telling. Jimmy's persecution complex, the idea that everyone looks down on him, might be something of a fallacy, but when it comes to Chuck, Howard, and even Kim you can see where he gets it from.

Shame we didn't see Nacho. There's clearly a nice parallel going on here, as Jimmy and Mike are getting dragged deeper into criminality, Nacho is desperately trying to climb out, and I really hope he somehow makes it. The difficulty with both Jimmy and Mike is that the longer they go on the less empathetic they become (I guess you could argue Walt was the same). I'm really hoping there's some sort of redemptive coda for Jimmy at the end.

The thing about Walt is, when you rewatch it knowing how it ends up, he's unsympathetic almost from the start. You can see he was always a monster, he just gradually lost the ability to deceive himself. He's not a sociopath, he has empathy for the people who die because of him (And of course was willing to turn himself in rather than kill Hank). But his belief that his superior intelligence entitles him to the Gray Matter money he missed out on overrides his morality and his empathy. He was never doing it to avoid leaving his family with medical bills after his death, not really, that was just his rationalization, when really just his imminent death removed his fear to do what he was always capable of.

One thing I loved in Breaking Bad is that in season 5, Walter was the one throwing out the idea to blow up police stations or kill people, and Jesse was the one coming up with SCIENCE.

It's fitting that what finally drew Mike to murder is that, it was the best way to minimize the number of deaths.

And I like the way they portray what's his name Salamancha as being just as smart as Mike, but not caring about murder. I'm almost certain that guy is gong to die, at least. I guess he has to die because if he was alive in Breaking Bad, Hector would not be the last Salamancha.

Fantastic piece of television.
When Jimmy was crying in the car I was wondering if it wasn't another set up though to con someone or be caught on security cameras.

That may have been the breaking point, because it was right after the selection of the scholarship recipients and his conversation with the losing candidate. I think he saw everything bad about his past in her, and when his car didn't start, it all finally just hit him. That may have been the most honest Jimmy has ever been with anybody, including himself.

He saw the losing candidate being treated the same way by HHM that he was treated by Chuck. They strung her along, then treated her like nothing but 'The one who shoplifted', just like Chuck strung him along and pretended to be his friend but only saw him as 'Slippin Jimmy'.

He was giving his season 1 self advice.

So I've only just caught up with the finale, and what a way to end the season! Saul Goodman's back, baby!

All the pieces are in place for Gus' empire next season. Is it next year yet? :wtf:

It was pretty obvious that Werner was toast, and I felt bad for both him and Mike. Mike has really crossed a line now, and explains how he reached his 'No Half Measures' approach in Breaking Bad.

I loved the long con that Jimmy and Kim played on the board. I was laughing at the over-the-top grieving at Chuck's grave purely for the benefit of whoever visited. Also good was Jimmy reading Chuck's letter he received from the will. You want sympathy for him? YOU GOT IT!

He plays the role so well. I was so excited when the announced the Saul spin-off when BB ended, and I haven't been let down.

The fifth series won't premiere until 2020. :(

That's not too surprising considering season 4 broke the pattern of the first three, but it still sucks. However, I'm sure it'll be well worth the wait!

I'm trying not to read too much into AMC Networks president Sarah Barnett's comment that the delay is “driven by talent needs.”

Sounds like Odenkirk has a busy scedule, no doubt doing a movie or something like that, and they are working around his schedule. That's my theory anyways. Me I can wait even though this is one of my top 5 favorite shows on tv. Got plenty of stuff to get watch. I haven't even gotten around to the last seasons of Daredevil,The Punisher,Arrested Development, and the latest seasons of The Tick and The Marvelous Ms Maisel. Then like 100 other shows such as , The Wire,The Americans and so forth.

So Better Call Saul AND Silicon Valley probably not until 2020. *Sigh* At least we have GoT. Don't know when Westworld is.
