Better Call Saul, the TV series

I doubt Jimmy is listed in Chuck's will as an heir (beyond receiving some insulting trinket)...unless it comes with some provisions such as Jimmy agreeing to give up his legal career permanently and spending the rest of his life working in a little shop like their dad.

I don't think Chuck has a will. I think he's not the kind of person who entertains the notion of himself failing. And if anybody suggested he write a will he would take it as an insult. So his money would go to his next of kin. For life insurance, I think he's the kind of guy who picks a beneficiary whenever he first buys it and then never bothers to update it.

I know there are a lot of places the show would go from here, but I still think the reason Chuck chose to kill himself in a way that there exist photos on public record that make it almost impossible for the insurance company to prove it was suicide is related to their last conversation. "I'm sure you feel those emotions, but I'd respect you more if you admitted you don't really care!" We know from Breaking Bad, he admits this to himself. I think he wanted to put Jimmy in the position to have to argue his death was an accident even knowing it was suicide.

The meter box thing is also interesting. Chuck knows his condition is all in his head. He knows if he doesn't know there's an electric field, he can't feel it. So he had to check the meter to know if he should be feeling pain or not, and he still couldn't control it.

One quirk is whether or not his partnership is still intact at the time of death. The partnership agreement may specify an heir to his interests in the firm. It would be hilarious if Jimmy offered to become the new M in HHM (which would allow Howard to keep his money and avoid the loans).

One more small thing.

Blockbuster video? This takes place earlier than I thought.

...not necessarily. Blockbuster still had a bunch of stores even when Breaking Bad first began airing in 2008.

Per wikipedia:

Blockbuster began to lose significant revenue for most of the 2000s, and in 2010, the company filed for bankruptcy protection.[8][9] The following year, its remaining 1,700 stores were bought by satellite television provider Dish Network.[10][11] While the Blockbuster brand has mostly been retired, Dish still maintains a relatively small number of Blockbuster franchise agreements, which allows some stores to remain open in a few markets.

True. I vaguely remember still going there after I got out of college in 2005. But a couple years later I would stop in during walks just to browse the used section and it felt like I was the first person the employees saw come in all day. And I guess in 2002 or so, Netflix streaming quality was still not so great.

And I guess DVD rental is still a thing in lower income areas.

I was renting DVDs at a local shop for one buck per day in 2007, 5 few months later said shop was dead as a doornail.

In the 90s, I remember a video rental store that changed owners (and names) about once a year. It continued on into the DVD era. It's amazing how long that went on...but it's now some sort of kitchen remodeling shop.

I started a rewatch, anyone know if next season is on for April as usual?

I saw that the date is revealed in the trial at the first episode in the time code of the video of the teenagers cutting the head off, starts in late 2001 or early 2002 depending on how slow the court system worked.

Anyone notice we never question Bob Odenkirk as been 20 years younger just because he has his hair coming down over his forehead?

The scene where Chuck is in the hospital and the doctor proves to Jimmy the condition in psychological. "Using those lanterns indoors, he could burn the house down!"

So much foreboding in that scene, now seems like he should have agreed to the commitment. Why didn't he in that scene? Did he refuse to see Chuck as somebody weak who needs help, or was he just unable to prove to himself he wasn't doing it just for the HHM payout? The first time you see it, it seems like he really thinks it's best for Chuck, but now I think that's just his rationalization for it.

Better Call Saul season 4 premiere confirmed for August 6th. There's some plot details released but I'm not looking at them, I want to be surprised.

Less than I thought we'd have to wait. Bring it on!
