Best way to watch DS9?

I've had the itch to watch the entire series from beginning to end, which I haven't done in at least 7-8 years.

So I went out tonight to retrieve my DVDs, which involved driving 40 minutes out to a storage unit and sifting through a ton of junk with a flashlight, and it was literally 0 degrees Fahrenheit. But I finally found what I was looking for. All 7 seasons.

Now, when I was 22-23 years old and had pretty much no money at all, I applied for (and was shocked to receive) a Circuit City credit card with a credit line of $1000, which I used to purchase all 7 seasons for around $600. I believe each season was $88. Stupid, yes, but I loved the show that much and Netflix wasn't a thing back then. Ah memories.

Anyway, I arrive home with my prize and my wife just rolls eyes, but I say, just watch the first episode with me, if you don't like it, I'll just watch the whole thing alone and I'll never say another word about it. OK, she agrees.

I finish making my go-to dinner, jerk chicken and rice and we settle in on the couch. Fire is going, we've got our warm jammies and thick socks on. Started up Emissary and....

It looks pretty terrible. I can't even say it looks average. There are 240p quality videos on Youtube that look better than this. I thought the DVDs would be the best possible presentation but maybe that's not the case?

Of course 15 years ago, my TV was 27 inches and square. Now my TV is 70 inches and rectangle. Obviously that makes a difference.

I can probably assume the show is never going to be remastered in HD, so what are my options, short of hauling home a 300 pound tube TV from some creepy guy's Craigslist ad?

(We finished the episode. The wife actually liked Emissary, and I thought she might. It does pull at the heartstrings a little. Although she did ask me like 10 times if I could get rid of the black bars on the side of the screen. Durrrr)

Anyway is a good way to watch Trek at its best.

I have all the boxsets, a few discs are a little worse for wear due to repeated viewings, but I also have Netflix, so if they get to the point where they are unwatchable I know I can enjoy it anyway--and just scoff when Netflix recommends STD because I watched it (as if it could every hope to come anywhere close to how great this show is).

Can't you change the 'view' on your TV?
Mine changes the size of the picture.
I don't have the black bars in the side of my DVD's.

Why in the name of the Prophets would you want to do that? It's got to look even worse all stretched out or zoomed in like that.

But why the black bars on the side?
I must has adjusted my aspect ratio,
I don't believe I had those when I watch my DVDs.
Of course you don't want to have part of the image cut off though.
That is sacrilege I'm pretty sure.

DS9 was filmed in a 4:3 aspect ratio. If you are watching on a modern 16:9 aspect ratio TV then you will have black bars on the side because the image was not designed to fit your screen. If you are eliminating the black bars then you are likely doing one of two things: stretching the picture horizontally to fit the entire screen, or zooming in to fill the screen which effectively crops the image.

Of course it all comes down to personal preference. Mine is to see it the way it was originally intended, which is in a 4:3 aspect ratio. Unless of course by some miracle they do remaster the series one day and it turns out they filmed the show leaving a safe area for 16:9, then I'd be all for it since we'd be getting even more of the picture than originally seen.

Three hundred pound guy with the creepy tube TV is probably your best bet.

I actually think the show looks better on Netflix. But there really is no good way to watch it. Digitally (DVD/streaming) you're going to get blocking in fast motion scenes. And it is still going to be dark.

I understand that some DVD players upscale for a high res screen better than others. Maybe swapping players, or the receiver if it is doing the upscaling, would help? Or show it in a smaller area on your screen. I know, that would cause even bigger black borders, but ...

My Tv had "normal"
And 4:3, movie expand, wide and zoom.
Anyway I watch everything on normal. And there is no black band and by switching back and forth in not seeing any cropping of the image.
I suppose it could be a minute amount but I'm not noticing it.
But on the 4:3 ratio everything looks squashed

Really, right now the DVD’s are your best option, and playing them in an upconverting DVD player or Blu-Ray player over HDMI. The current digital files on iTunes, Netflix and other digital sites are very poorly de-interlaced that has thrown out half of your horizontal resolution, so instead of getting the 640x480 resolution that you get from DVD’s, you are getting a 640x240 image.

But with DS9, really you have to remember that the current masters are composite video masters, so you are getting an image that is a little better than Laserdisc.

This is definitely frustrating! I tried watching a couple episodes on my tablet via Netflix and Amazon Prime, and it was OK, but you can't really kick back with a good plate of food watching a show on a tablet. Just throws off the whole vibe.

I'll probably start looking around for an old tube TV, hell people give the things away on Craigslist all the time.

I don't understand this topic. Watch on Netflix. What's the problem? The picture quality is pretty high despite not being in HD.
I'm with you.
I watch on my 46 inch TV.
I have the aspect ratio set on "normal".
It doesn't cut off the images.
Nor do they look distorted as far as I can tell.
Maybe we're not picky enough.

Unless you have a 4x3 TV, there is no way to watch DS9 where it fills the entire screen without stretching or cropping. It's impossible.

I don't understand why people like Netflix. Content comes and goes and not on my schedule. Resolution isn't as good as disks. Internet flakiness could interrupt your show in the middle.

Because it's nothing like what you describe. And because some of us live in 2019.
