Best Voyager Characters

I cant believe people don't like VOY! I love it. The premise is fracking brilliant.

Except it didn't live up to said premise and practically abandoned large parts of it so....as Miss Lemon said, it ended up just like another TNG.

The ship is still shiny because Janeway is such a super awesome badass captain that she gained the loyalty of the Marquis, liberated a Borg drone, helped a hologram develop a soul, and got everyone home from the delta quadrant WHILE putting up with Nelix from start to finish!

:wtf:

Are you kidding?
The ship repaired itself between episodes because of unambitious writing and network intervention. And Janeway did not "gain" the loyalty of the Maquis because she was "badass"- the Maquis became loyal because the writers clearly had very little interest in creating conflict or compromise between the two sets of crews and set them up in starfleet uniforms at the end of the first episode.

If you'd said you'd loved Voyager because of all the various and interesting sci-fi stories it had done over the years then fine. But saying it was awesome because of the premise - which to any sane person it was obvious they did not exploit anywhere NEAR enough - is absolutely ridiculous.

Sometimes I despair at the lack of ability to logically criticize and evaluate the positive and negative aspects of a show's
writing and production, its like talking to children. "Voyager zoomed through the delta quadrant almost problem free because Janeway was badass".....I mean give me an effing break and take a course or something.

Now try to remember, everybody is entitled to have their own opinion. Even if it's an absolutely ridiculous one.

I mean, I love Voyager because I think Chakotay is the most interesting character of all Star Trek series.

I enjoy sci-fi so much because i am able to suspend disbelief while watching it... If I picked apart everything in the star trek universe that is unrealistic I'd be here for quite some time. Whats the point of watching if you just analyze what the writers were thinking the entire time?

Its kind of hard to ignore wasted potential when thinking about a show like Voyager.

All of Trek is wasted potential if you are hankering after something darker, bigger, more meaningful. VOY should have been BSG, DS9 should have Bab5'd it up more, ENT should have been 7 seasons of season 3.

What we got with VOY was some great characters and interactions, lots of humor, lots of warmth and often excellent sci fi stories. VOY is a lot of fun.

Agreed. I feel like Voyager was too 'shiny' at the end of it all. If they had been struggling for supplies (literally, not having their photon torpedo supply reset after every episode) then it would have been a real, gritty tale (a la Year of Hell; why couldn't they do more eps like that?)

However, Voyager does have great character interactions, which is something I've always loved about the show. And there are great sci-fi stories in there (with a few Captain Proton episodes of course :)) that make the series a lot of fun.

Now don't start bitching about DS9, you hear me? :klingon:

I go back and forth on this. I agree that VOY had a lot of wasted potential, but your point is also well taken.

It would have been nice to have more arcs, more character growth, and more realistic continuity.

However, Trek's hopeful optimism is of the franchise's defining characteristics, and it's one of the main reasons that's made Trek so attractive to so many people for so long. Its tone is hopeful and its message is positive.

In that sense, VOY got it right, even when it got it wrong. If that makes any sense....

It's not my favorite of the franchise, but it does have its moments. And when I think it's good, I think it's really good. It is fun.

Excuse me, but I'm going to quote myself:

Star Trek is a franchise, with all the 'bottom line' financial decisions this entails. Like much mainstream television, it can be simplistic, glib and condescending.

But at its finest, Star Trek is a bona fide philosophical companion. It depicts limited, sometimes-powerless human beings, trying to come to terms with a baffling or inhospitable universe. It shows characters unafraid of high ideals, even in the midst of interpersonal tensions, or grave danger. And, for the most part, it does so sincerely, unafraid of paralysing cynicism. The lesson is this: that with perseverance, reflection and collaboration, we may indeed 'live long and prosper', in an imperfect world.
