best TV/SPACE effects..

Ever...

Meaning this..of all the science fiction tv-series that have ever been done, from TOS to Stargate, and anything else inbetween, including mini-series, what show had the best spaceship/space effects? When, if shown on a screen, side by side with the others, the effects of this one show would outshine all the rest...

I always thought that BSG and Firefly had extremely good effects for a TV budget.

For its time, I really thought V had a great shot when the large spaceships were shown above the major cities (which ID4 'borrowed')...

nuBSG has, IMO, the best special effects ever. But I must give props to DS9 and some of their efforts. Even the effects of oldBSG still hold up, IMO.

I know this sounds like I'm a fan or something, but the whole build up to Galactica's last jump wasn't too shabby either.

When adding the codicil 'ever' you preclude many great effect that now seem dated, but were amazing for their time.

Another vote for BSG. That show has the best cinematography and special effects for outer space that I've ever seen on a scifi TV show. I guess Firefly would qualify as well.

Some of the CGI effects for BAB-5 were pretty good. And I also think the effects for TOS, the original effects, still hold up.

But yes..BSG's effects are the best. In fact I would argue that oldBSG had the best effects, as overused as they were, and they were better than most of TNG's early effects. When I saw the crappy effects for ENCOUNTER AT FARPOINT, which were made over ten years after oldBSG, I could only laugh...heck, TOS's effects were better!!!

Now that's exagerating.

really??? I just watched Encounter about a month ago...that 'gate' effect for Q was terrible...the Enterprise flybys were just awful...and the miniture set that they keep showing shots of? Dreadful....

DOOMSDAY MACHINE had better effects , event with a plastic model standing in for the Constellation!!

Rob

I would say a toss up between nuBSG and Firefly, I loved the Galactica's atmosphere jump and the death run of the Pegasus and I still remember Firefly's salvage run in the pilot and well Wash's 'rescue' after the bar fight :)

I would say Space : Above and beyond were good for its time too and honorable mention would be V and V the final battle. I just loved the arrival of the motherships over the cities.

For the eighties on TV, not too shabby.

Even if the effects aren't top notch, saying that TOS' effects are better is a bit much. The Farpoint miniature? Maybe, but the rest? I don't think so. I know it's the in thing now to trash the early seasons of TNG, but this is overdoing it a bit.

I forgot about SPACE ABOVE AND BEYOND. Good pick. They were CGI weren't they? But they were pretty good for their time.

I am actually in the middle of watching JASON OF STAR COMMAND. Oh, these are not the best effects...but for a saturday morning live-action show, they aren't that bad. In fact, JASON OF STAR COMMAND also has better effects than Encounter at Farpoint!

BSG spaces effects are the best, but that's really mostly because they're just the latest. Before BSG it'd be Firefly or Enterprise, before that DS9...The next big space opera will blow them all away.

BSG's Cylon robot effects on the other hand....not so much. I'm looking forward to the day that CGI can be meshed with practical elements in a convincing manner on a TV budget.

Sorry..but the the effects of TOS's better episodes are better than TNG's Farpoint (and dreadful Naked Now)...the way they filmed the effects on video tape may have saved them money, but watching them on DVD's? They just look like high-school quality...woe to the day ENCOUNTER comes out in HIGH DEF/BLURAY, and those effects will suffer even more...

nBSG
Firefly
and for its time the B5 starships were very dynamic. And the scene where Sheridan jumps from the maglev and is saved by Kosh-I remember it just blew me away at the time. I'd never scene such realistic depth before. Now, it looks a bit fake but then-wow!
