Best tv seasons of the decade (2001-2010)

Just a few hours left of 2010 before we say hello to 2011 and a new decade. This pas decade (2001-2010) has been good for television. We all witnessed how television series started to equal Hollywood movies in quality and eventually surpass it... and then some. These days I hardly watch any (Hollywood) movies anymore. Thet just can’t seem to hold my interest. But I have watched a LOT of television. And a lot of it was very good. So what are you fondest tv memories of the past decade and what were the best television seasons in your opinion.

10. Sons of Anarcy S2 (2009) – I haven’t seen season 3 yet. I only discovered this show on BD a couple of months ago. But its second season was a breathtaking rollercoaster ride from the first to the last episode. Fantastic.

9. Doctor Who S5 (2010) – Less OTT and camp than the RTD reimagining, Moffat takes nuWho more into the realms of fantasy and drama than sci-fi. Smith and Gillan are fantastic together and the superb guest actors (Alex Kingston!) made me enjoy this season a lot more than the first four seasons. And I have a feeling that season 6 will be even better.

8. Torchwood: Children of Earth (S3, 2009) – After two enjoyable but rather hit and miss seasons, Torchwood returned with a 5 part miniseries that was leaps and bounds better than its predecessors. Way more mature, dark and disturbing, Torchwood has turned into a tense and harrowing sci-fi drama. The dark and downbeat ending was a brilliant and daring choice by the writers.

7. Farscape S3 (2001) – The season premiere wasn’t called Season of Death for nothing. Season 3 saw a lot of change, bold writing, a lot of “did that really happen moments?” and a lot of fantastic episodes. Into the Lion’s Den was the best twoparter of the series, Farscape’s answer to TBOBW.

6. Alias S2 (2002-2003) – The One With Irina Derevko, ‘nuff said. This truely was a fantastic series, but sadly it couldn’t maintain the quality of the first two seasons. A shame.

5. In Treatment S1 (2008) – Who would’ve thought that 25 minutes of talking could be so compelling? In Treatment is a brilliant show and its first season was fantastic. I loved it so much, that I watched the last 13 episodes nonstop. Superb.

4. Six Feet Under S2 (2002) – I haven’t seen this in a long time but this is the season where everything fell to pieces (Nathan & Brenda’s relationship, Ruth and Nikolai’s romance, Nathan’s healthscare) and we got some of the most moving television moments ever. I must rewatch this series soon.

3. 24 S3 (2003-2004) – The last season to feature the cast from day one. Season 3 felt like the ending of a trilogy as we said goodbye to a lot of major characters and storylines that were set in motion in the first season. It also was the last season with one threat that was sustained throughout the day. The end of Sherry, Nina, Chapelle and David Palmer’s carreer. It was all here. Brilliant.

2. The Shield S5 (2006) – Picking the best season of The Shield is like picking your favorite Pussycat Doll; They’re all delicious. But season 5 really is the Nicole Scherzinger of the bunch. Forest Whitakes disappears into character as IAD agent Jon Kavanaugh and gives one of the most fantastic television performances I have seen this decade. His scenes with Michael Chicklis are electrifying. Coupled with brilliant acting from the rest of the cast and superb writing this was nailbitingly tense television. The next episodes couldn’t come soon enough.

1.Battlestar Galactica S2 (2005-2006) – I love this show from beginning to end but season 2 was the best IMO, largely due to the fantastic 7 part resolution to the season one finale and the breathtaking Pegasus trilogy. The season 2.0 cliffhanger was agonizing. And that three month wait was the longest of my life!

Memorable, but didn’t make the list: Sherlock S1, Deadwood S3, Enterprise S3, The West Wing S3 & S4, Rome S1 & S2, Band of Brothers.

So what are yours?

I'd have to say the 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 TV seasons were the best overall this decade.

2003-2004 had:
Angel season 5
Boston Public season 4
Becker season 6
Reno 911! season 1
Degrassi TNG season 3
Dead Like Me season 1
Battlestar Galactica Miniseries
Enterprise season 3

2004-2005 had:
Reno 911! season 2
Degrassi TNG season 4
Dead Like Me season 2
Battlestar Galactica season 1
Enterprise season 4
The Office season 1
House season 1

You just don't have TV like that anymore. And the few shows from that list that are still around pale in quality to these seasons. I don't care what anyone says lol.

Surely the decade started in 2000 (unlike the century, I know)? Otherwise 2000 wouldn't be in any decade since it's clearly not part of the '90s.

Anyway:

Season 2 of The Wire - Intricately plotted, gut-wrenching, socially engaged.
Season 2 of Battlestar Galactica - Kept what made Season 1 great but just made it more epic.
Season 1 of Six Feet Under - I sort of lost interest in this show after a while, but the first season was superb, I thought.

I don't know anymore. The whole millennium thing threw me off. Let's just say we're talking about the best tv seasons of the past 10 years.

Only nerds start counting at 0, therefore decades run from 1 unless you're a nerd.

Nobody talks about 1940 as part of the 1930s, for instance, so in the common understanding, the last decade was 2000-2009, and we're in the first year of a new decade.

In no particular order...

Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends Season 2 - An already magnificently creative show got better with episodes like "Mac Daddy" (introducing Cheese) and "Frankie, My Dear" a wonderful farce. (Almost every other season of this show is good too.)

Tokyo Pig Season 1 - The one-and-only-season of this brilliant-but-cancelled anime showed wonderfully hyperactive imagination, hilarious fourth-wall-shattering gags and boundless energy.

Star Trek: Enterprise Season 4 - Perhaps the best Season of Trek in a while, this wonderful season fully embraced the rich Trek mythos to wonderful effect. A criminal shame that the show didn't get renewed for another season. (Season 3 was also QUITE good.)

Justice League Unlimited Season 2 - The Cadmus arc in full effect had numerously breathtaking twists and turns, with amazing action and tons of heroes, villains, and set pieces. (Season 3 gets a nod too.)

Pokemon Season 6 (Advanced) OR Season 8 (Advanced Battle) - After a few a couple of fair-but-not-great seasons, Pokemon truly came back to life in Season 6, even if the great Misty left. Nearly all of the episodes of both these seasons were funny, well done, and enjoyable.

Power Rangers Dino Thunder - Power Rangers had already come back fairly well to me in the enjoyably campy Ninja Storm, but Dino Thunder upped the ante with a not-quite-but-darn-close Season 1 vibe, the return of Tommy (!) and great action throughout.

Creature Comforts America - Another brilliant, but canceled. I know the British version is out there too, but the American version was FUNNY. Shame it merely came and went.

Law & Order: Trial By Jury - Also Brilliant, but canceled, and IMO, much better than Criminal Intent. Would have loved to have seen several full seasons.

Others I couldn't really pinpoint now include any seasons of Law & Order with Briscoe, a couple of seasons of SVU (mainly the ones with Alex Cabot),

This will be really hard to remember...

Lost Season Three.
Lost Season Five.
Twenty Four Season Three.
Angel Season Three.
Farscape Season Three.

For some reason, the third season of a genre show is always the best!

Pretty good when you add it all up. It only seems so depressing now because of the lack of good space opera series anymore. Shows about serial killers, bikers and polygamists just can't compensate, no matter how good they are.

Alias season 2 (2002 - 2003)
Angel season 4 (2002 - 2003)
Battlestar Galactica seasons 2 and 4 (2005 - 2006; 2008)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 5 (2000 - 2001)
Dexter seasons 2 and 4 (2007; 2009)

Heroes season 1 (2006 - 2007)
Lost seasons 4 and 5 (2008; 2009)
True Blood seasons 1 and 2 (2008; 2009)

I don't know if single season shows count but I'm surprised nobody has mention Firefly yet. I was also quite fond of the short-lived HBO series K Street.

Firefly
The West Wing Seasons 1-4
The Shield (Take your pick, they're all brilliant!)
Jeremiah Season 2
Carnivale Seasons 1-2

Plenty more I'm sure.
