Just a few hours left of 2010 before we say hello to 2011 and a new decade. This pas decade (2001-2010) has been good for television. We all witnessed how television series started to equal Hollywood movies in quality and eventually surpass it... and then some. These days I hardly watch any (Hollywood) movies anymore. Thet just can’t seem to hold my interest. But I have watched a LOT of television. And a lot of it was very good. So what are you fondest tv memories of the past decade and what were the best television seasons in your opinion.
10. Sons of Anarcy S2 (2009) – I haven’t seen season 3 yet. I only discovered this show on BD a couple of months ago. But its second season was a breathtaking rollercoaster ride from the first to the last episode. Fantastic.
9. Doctor Who S5 (2010) – Less OTT and camp than the RTD reimagining, Moffat takes nuWho more into the realms of fantasy and drama than sci-fi. Smith and Gillan are fantastic together and the superb guest actors (Alex Kingston!) made me enjoy this season a lot more than the first four seasons. And I have a feeling that season 6 will be even better.
8. Torchwood: Children of Earth (S3, 2009) – After two enjoyable but rather hit and miss seasons, Torchwood returned with a 5 part miniseries that was leaps and bounds better than its predecessors. Way more mature, dark and disturbing, Torchwood has turned into a tense and harrowing sci-fi drama. The dark and downbeat ending was a brilliant and daring choice by the writers.
7. Farscape S3 (2001) – The season premiere wasn’t called Season of Death for nothing. Season 3 saw a lot of change, bold writing, a lot of “did that really happen moments?” and a lot of fantastic episodes. Into the Lion’s Den was the best twoparter of the series, Farscape’s answer to TBOBW.
6. Alias S2 (2002-2003) – The One With Irina Derevko, ‘nuff said. This truely was a fantastic series, but sadly it couldn’t maintain the quality of the first two seasons. A shame.
5. In Treatment S1 (2008) – Who would’ve thought that 25 minutes of talking could be so compelling? In Treatment is a brilliant show and its first season was fantastic. I loved it so much, that I watched the last 13 episodes nonstop. Superb.
4. Six Feet Under S2 (2002) – I haven’t seen this in a long time but this is the season where everything fell to pieces (Nathan & Brenda’s relationship, Ruth and Nikolai’s romance, Nathan’s healthscare) and we got some of the most moving television moments ever. I must rewatch this series soon.
3. 24 S3 (2003-2004) – The last season to feature the cast from day one. Season 3 felt like the ending of a trilogy as we said goodbye to a lot of major characters and storylines that were set in motion in the first season. It also was the last season with one threat that was sustained throughout the day. The end of Sherry, Nina, Chapelle and David Palmer’s carreer. It was all here. Brilliant.
2. The Shield S5 (2006) – Picking the best season of The Shield is like picking your favorite Pussycat Doll; They’re all delicious. But season 5 really is the Nicole Scherzinger of the bunch. Forest Whitakes disappears into character as IAD agent Jon Kavanaugh and gives one of the most fantastic television performances I have seen this decade. His scenes with Michael Chicklis are electrifying. Coupled with brilliant acting from the rest of the cast and superb writing this was nailbitingly tense television. The next episodes couldn’t come soon enough.
1.Battlestar Galactica S2 (2005-2006) – I love this show from beginning to end but season 2 was the best IMO, largely due to the fantastic 7 part resolution to the season one finale and the breathtaking Pegasus trilogy. The season 2.0 cliffhanger was agonizing. And that three month wait was the longest of my life!
Memorable, but didn’t make the list: Sherlock S1, Deadwood S3, Enterprise S3, The West Wing S3 & S4, Rome S1 & S2, Band of Brothers.
So what are yours?
