Best Trek Film Score Sans TMP

Okay, we all know what's going to happen anytime there's a discussion of the Trek film scores. TMP is going to win hands down, and rightfully so. So let's take it out of the running. What do you think is the best overall Trek movie score aside from TMP?

TFF has the most beautiful stuff in the whole batch of films, between the Yosemite opening and the descent to the god planet, so it gets my vote.

However, TWOK has got great stuff ... trouble is, it was great music before TWOK even existed, when it was written by other composers for other movies. Very catchy, though.

I agree on both counts. TFF is my favorite score. Most of the music is beautiful. TWOK comes in a close second, but as you said it is derivative. Horner even stole from himself. Watch Krull to hear what I'm talking about.

Definitely TUC. It just fits the movie perfectly and does a wonderful job of setting pace, tone and overall mood for the film.

You forced us down to one! Damn you :p

Some what hesitent, but Horner's TWoK won easily.

Second place is a hard one for me, as I feel 5, 7 & 8 are on an even playing field, but different styles.

Saying a movie composer stole from himself is like saying water is wet. They all steal from each other, and from classical music genres. And all of them have "tendencies" that they know work and use whenever they can. Williams, Kamen, Rosenberg, Goldsmith, Eidelmann, et al, they ALL take from themselves...

I can't choose just one. I like aspects of all the Trek soundtracks with the exception of INS and NEM.

TWOK - Leaving Spacedock

TSFS - Stealing the Enterprise

TVH - Enterprise - A/Closing Credits

TFF - Openning Credits/Climbing El Capitan

TUC - Enterprise and Excelsior flyover/closing credits

GEN - Kirk's horseback ride in Idaho

FC - Vulcans landing in Montana

I know what you're saying and agree for the most part. But have you seen Krull? To say that Horner is relying on his "tendencies" is being quite generous.

Forget about KRULL (except for the guy who went on and redeemed himself by playing Eddington), listen to BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS. It's largely a poor man's orchestration of TWOK (also very fun, damn it), done a couple years earlier. But with BATTLE, the lifts from other composers are more obnoxiously obvious, especially from Goldsmith's GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY (which was barely a year old at that point.)

The thing with Horner is that he does the EXACT same thing. Listen to 48HRS and COMMANDO. GORKY PARK and RED HEAT. It's like that "kirk's explosive reply" thing that he trots out in ALIENS and other times, or the 'stealing the enterprise' thing that comes out in UNCOMMON VALOR, practically the same arrangments as well as the same notes.

You're right of course. I had forgotten about Battle Beyond the Stars. I loved that as a kid. Plus I was glad to see John Boy Walton get some work. :)
What you say is true. Not only does Horner steal from himself, but it seems like he's too lazy to even try to hide that fact.

Horner used to be one of my top 3 on the composer list until I became painfully aware of how unoriginal he could be. I don't think I've been interested in anything he's done in the past 20 years. He actually used a segment in Cocoon that was note-for-note from the Genesis Countdown scene in TWOK. I still love his early stuff like the Treks and Battle Beyond the Stars, regardless of how derivative. I had forgotten he did Krull. I might have to drag that one out and watch it again, for old time's sake. If I can get through it.

Then listen to "The Perfect Storm". One of Horner's best IMO. There is little doubt the guys also got some talent.
