Best TNG Special Effect?

I love the scene in "Cause and Effect" when the Bozeman appears from the rift. As Bozeman approaches the Enterprise the crew interaction and dialogue (except Troi saying "We have to get out of here. Now.") was awesome. The image of the two nacelles dragging against each other and then the nacelle from the Enterprise exploding was just shocking the first time I saw it. I'd have to rank that as my favorite TNG special effect scene. What comes later with the bridge officers being tossed around the ship was a bit over the top (Frakes Directing:lol:) and the final explosion was okay. The physical contact between the two ships was TNG's best in my opinion......

I liked it when the FX people finally understood that these were space ships and not airplanes. Somewhere around season 4 or 5, when E-D would be sitting at a full stop, a heading would be ordered. But instead of the ship making a hard left or right banking turn and then going to warp, the E-D would back toward the direction it was headed, make a 180 degree turn at speed, then go to warp. I remember the first time they used it, my reaction was something like 'about time'.

That was always one of my favorite ship shots. It didn't really 'back up' exactly though... more like a reverse-pivot.

As primitive as it was, I was always rather impressed by the CG crystalline entity.

Your implication suggests a ship's size and mass directly relates to its maneuverability in space.

I know it's not realistic, among other things such as phasers and photorps making sounds (and sound in space in general), but it gels nicely with the naval analogy and therefore works for me.

It helped make the ship feel larger to me. A dramatic concession.

Hmm. Perhaps I'm being missunderstood. I always felt that the point of the maneuver was to show E-D was a space ship. The 180 pivot at speed isn't that much different to the at speed "backflip" that the shuttle performs on approach to the ISS.

There's just so many great, old-school TNG special FX. It's hard to pick one out.

One of my all-time favorites was the strange light-creatures that fly by the Ent-D in S1 "Where No Man Has Gone Before". I think that was the ep.

Deja vu!

I always liked the Borg Cube regenerating in Q Who, when we see the conduits snaking around.

There's also a shot of the E from the early episodes, when she's orbitting a planet. The shot is from behind, slightly below, and the E is turning away from us. That shot is always so graceful, I think.

I think one of the coolest shots they did was the final fly-by used every week in the opening credits, where you can see someone walking through the observation lounge right before the mighty D heads off to boldly go. :D

Put more thought into this during the evening.....another scene that I really loved was from "The Host". I loved the seen where Riker is piloting Odan to the negotiations and the "escort" shuttle attacks. The weapons fire was very bright and vivid, and the detail on the hull of the "escort" shuttle was very real.

Hiding the male organ...My wife now thinks that all men in the 24th century have had their penis removed. They love to show the women's boobs (which is fine with me because its two for the price of one). But if you didn't know any better, the men, and she does have a point, seem..well...memberless.

No shit, I never noticed that. Thanks :bolian:

Several of course: The Data dream sequence in "Birthright I", Where No One Has Gone Before", "11001001", et al

A few I can think of...

From "The Child": Wesley standing in Ten Forward looking out the window as Enterprise goes to warp.

From "All Good Things": The future Enterprise rescuing the Pasteur from the Klingon ships.

From "Contagion": The destruction of the USS Yamato.

** Edited: I misspelled Pasteur as Pasture **

I liked:
The Next Phase... walking through things
Matter of Perspective: background/foreground changes
Brothers - triple role for Spiner
Homeward - The Sign of La Forge
Q-who - Rocking the chair.. Q disapears but the chair moves as he does
Preemptive Strike: opening battle with many tiny ships vs. one big ship
Preemptive Strike - nightttime phaser fest
Gambit part 1: Phaser vs. rock. rock does not win

The Best of Both Worlds, when data is in the shuttle craft and you can see the Enterprise passing by from the window, it gave the episode a very filmic quality.
