Best TNG Special Effect?

I love the scene in "Cause and Effect" when the Bozeman appears from the rift. As Bozeman approaches the Enterprise the crew interaction and dialogue (except Troi saying "We have to get out of here. Now.") was awesome. The image of the two nacelles dragging against each other and then the nacelle from the Enterprise exploding was just shocking the first time I saw it. I'd have to rank that as my favorite TNG special effect scene. What comes later with the bridge officers being tossed around the ship was a bit over the top (Frakes Directing:lol:) and the final explosion was okay. The physical contact between the two ships was TNG's best in my opinion......

I hated the way the ship exploded, it's spinning and then IT STOPS. Because it was on a string or a hook, or some such for shooting, but the damned thing STOPPED moving when it blew up!

I can't think of a "best", but I can certainly think of a few "worst."

The one I always hated was the SFX from the battle in "Yesterday's Enterprise." Here we have a Galaxy class warship, bristling with phaser banks and photon torpedoes, and the best it can do is fire off a measly three torpedoes and a few short phaser bursts from ONE of its phaser arrays? All while in the fight of its life? Lame. I understand that the SFX in 1989-1990 was limited, but still. What a freaking letdown that whole battle sequence was.

I have to agree with that, although I still love the collision between the two ships. The explosion was filmed a couple of different ways and almost all of them were unsatisfactory at best.

Agreed, but one might conclude their briefly mentioned previous battle damage had been more severe than we might have expected.

Then again, her last stand in 'Generations' was an almost play for play repeat, albeit with better camera angles. :scream:

I know a lot of people are gonna disagree with me, but I'm holding to my opinion... I think the FX shots from "Where No One Has Gone Before" were the best of the series... they really gave us some spectacular vistas to look at in that episode.

Hiding the male organ...My wife now thinks that all men in the 24th century have had their penis removed. They love to show the women's boobs (which is fine with me because its two for the price of one). But if you didn't know any better, the men, and she does have a point, seem..well...memberless.

Rob

Where did that post come from?

But we're talking TNG, so I digress. Just think this has always been funny. Possibly the first man to get a boner for Kirk.

The E-D decloaking and firing at the Klingon ship in All Good Things.

Butch

I also have to mention the scene in DEFECTOR when the Romulan Warbirds decloak in front of the "D" and then..moments later..the birds of prey decloak around the warbirds..great staging there and first time we ever saw a Klingon..Romulan...Federation ship in the same scene..

To be fair, it was a hell of a lot better than the usual type of ship explosion we'd get on the show; namely, they matte a fireball in over the ship and then remove the ship element. Exciting! At least this way, it looked like the Enterprise was really blowing up.

But that exploding fireball was so cool!!! But yeah, I do agree with you. Where would TNG be with out mattes?

Rob

Even as a kid, I knew how the 'exploding fireball' effect worked. It was a lot cooler then than it is now.

If that's a "boner" I feel really sorry for Mr. Collins. At least he was making "headines" (ba dum BUM).

In the book Chekov's Enterprise Walter Koenig mentioned that the costumes came with regulation undergarments to prevent such a scene as above. Curiouser and curiouser....

I always loved the shot of the E-D at the end of Data's last dream in Birthrigh Part 1. To me that's something a little bit special.

Actually, I have always thought that was a good special effect, until the Klingon ships decloak. The Enterprise being stared down by two warbirds was great, and the music/directing for the scene was enjoyable....but I was not impressed by the arrival of the IKS ships. The lighting for them seemed unreasonable, too bright. My first thought on seeing them was wasn't that it was a cool effect, it was "that looks really computer generated". Just my opinion. It was a good episode.

Back then I couldn't tell that good because it was back in the day of RCA cables and no HIDEF..I just thought it was cool seeing the look on Tomalok's face when the Klingon ships decloaked..I GOT GOOSBUMPS!!!!
