Best TNG books?

I recently got really into trek literature and a local book store has alot of trek books for $2.50 so i have been going nuts. But i have found that not all of the books are good. Q in Law had a terrible beginning and end but for 200 hundred pages had me laughing out loud about every 2 pages. And i have repeatedly tried to read Perchance to Dream but the characters are so horribly written, i quit twice.
But the good ones are usually really good. The Romulan Prize was superb IMO and i really liked War Drums despite how quickly it ended.
So the point of this thread is to know where to go next. The bookstore i live by has mostly TNG 10-25 but some others. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Vendeta
Q-Squared
Imzadi (only the first one. Actually, there is no second one, so basically: Imzadi)

I'd have to peruse my shelves to refresh my memory, but those are the ones that jumped to mind first.

I really enjoyed the best and the brightest Susan Wright.

I remember ENJOYING Reunion and Kahless by Michael Jan Friedman.

I really enjoyed the best and the brightest Susan Wright.

Which isn't actually a TNG novel, it's just branded that way because they figured that would sell better than if they just called it a Starfleet Academy novel. It crosses over with all three 24th-century series -- perhaps somewhat more with TNG than the others -- but it focuses mainly on its original group of characters.

Gulliver's Fugitives by Keith Sharee
Strike Zone and Rock and a Hard Place both by Peter David

So many to choose.
#4. Survivors
#10. A Rock and a Hard Place
#12. Doomsday World
#13. The Eyes of the Beholders
#18. Q-in-Law
#20. Spartacus
#26. The Romulan Prize
#47-49. The Q Continuum Trilogy
Metamorphosis
Vendetta
Reunion
Imzadi
The Devil's Heart
Dark Mirror
Q-Squared
Crossover
Kahless
The "A Time To,,," Series
Destiny

It's much more TNG than anything else. There are many references to the Enterprise being around or what they are currently doing. Then there is a main part where most of them either visit or are assigned to the ship.

So I agree it does reference all three series (TNG, DS9, VOY) but it is MUCH more TNG than anything else. And I really liked how the elements were tied in on the edges, but it didn't take place entirely on the Enterprise.

Naming wise, I'm sure it was packaged as TNG to sell copies. At any rate, I really enjoyed the book and would offer it up as a good read to any TNG fan.

Do you want just pre-ATT/Nemesis?
Here are my favorites from the TV series era:
Q-Squared (which you already read)
Imzadi
Reunion
Those are the only ones that take place during the show that I've read so far, but I really liked all three of them.

Wow, I'm seeing so many names that I haven't seen since high school in the early 90s... but I'm not remembering a whole lot about the actual books. My rule of thumb back in the 90s was that if it's by Peter David, it's probably good. I also liked Michael Jan Friedman and Diane Duane. I'm seem to remember liking the Reeves-Stevens works back in the day too - well, at least the stuff outside of the Shatnerverse they did. I really think it's time to revisit some of these old titles myself...

No, what it is more than anything else is a Starfleet Academy book focusing on six entirely new characters. The TNG references outnumber the DS9 and VGR references, but this is not primarily a book about Picard and the Enterprise crew. They (and the other TV characters such as Dax and Dr. Zimmerman) are supporting characters in a book about Jayme Miranda and her classmates.

This isn't a criticism, of course. I enjoyed the book and regret it wasn't followed up on. But since the original poster was asking for TNG books, I felt it would be misleading to present The Best and the Brightest as a TNG book without explaining what its real focus is.

Vendetta for the win.
Admittedly I haven't read anything above #25 or so. Vendetta always stands out in my head as the best.

even though it's quite hard, I'll give it a go

my picks from the pre-ATT era would be:
Vendetta
Federation -- if Crossover counts so should this ;)
Q-Squared
Imzadi
Reunion
Dark Mirror
Immortal Coil
A Rock and a Hard Place
Diplomatic Implausibility
Section 31: Rogue

ATT and afterwards picks would be:
A Time to Kill / Heal / War, Peace
The Buried Age
Destiny
Losing the Peace

I particularly enjoyed these novels, though I've not read some of them since the early or mid-90s:
  • A Time To Kill
  • A Time To Heal
  • Crossover
  • Dark Mirror
  • Federation (The Next Generation portions were the least interesting)
  • Kahless
  • Q-in-Law
  • The Return
  • The Romulan Prize

Vendetta (Borg return, Planet killer, Guinan's sister)
The Captain's Honor (TOS space Romans return as Federation members, pseudo-Kzinti)
Metamorphosis (Data becomes human)
Federation (epic TOS/TNG Crossover, Zefram Cochrane, incompatible with First Contact movie)
Reunion (Picard reunites with his old crew, one's turned murderer)
Q-Squared (Four timelines, Q, Trelane, Jack Crusher)
Survivors (Tasha Yar's life story)
Crossover (Scotty and McCoy rescue Spock and reunificationists from Romulans in the TNG era)
The Return (Kirk returns from the dead in the 24th century! TNG crew co-star)

I meant to imply it was more TNG than DS9 or VOY.

A lot of good ones have already been mentioned, but I would also recommend Masks, Fortune's Light, Spartacus, and A Call to Darkness.
