Best Star Trek Ever

Been a fan of Star Trek since I was a child. Seen everything. Hands down Star trek: Discovery is the best Star Trek television series or movie this franchise has come up with. The story arc is complex (scifi people can handle this. Certainly more complex than a Star Wars plot). Characters are developing nicely. Story is moving at 100mph all the time (especially the last few episodes). Writers of this series should be applauded for what they have come up with.

If it can continue to improve on the pace it has across the first 13 episodes, it is well on its way to being my favorite series of all the spin offs. As it is now, it's already third to TOS and DS9...but since the first two seasons and the last season of DS9 were average-to-below average...DSC has the capacity to surpass it.

A lot will depend on what they do in the second season, obviously.

I can throw an early prediction out that it will never surpass TOS for me though. I'm pretty sure I could star in my own porn series with Sasha Grey and Jenna Haze, and it probably wouldn't surpass TOS.

Hmm....well....maybe I should think about that one. That might not be true.

I would have to give it second best Star Trek first season.

I still have to give TOS first season the title because it was rather ground breaking TV.

If the quality of Discovery first season was actually maintained a full 29 episodes (as TOS) - the title probably would go to Discovery for me. I guess I would have to judge season 1 and season 2 of Discovery to give an answer as to best first 29 episodes.

I'm a TNG fan - but that first year was ROUGH. I put it probably at the bottom of my first season list (while it still maintains the top on my chart of favorite Star Trek series).

I'm enjoying DSC a lot so far. On an episode-by-episode level, I think its first season is neck-and-neck with TOS's so far. BUT the focus of DSC is way too narrow. It's just about the Klingon War except for the detour into the Mirror Universe. The other series all had a broader range of stories. DS9, like DSC, was also serialized but it managed to juggle a lot of material all at once. The original Bryan Fuller pitch made DSC seem like it would have a gigantic meta-focus and, through shake-ups and changes in direction, that's become lost in the translation.

The other thing to consider is that while I think DSC has had a great first season, what if I end up in a situation where -- three years from now -- I'm wondering why DSC still can't have the same quality it had in its first season? I thought BSG had a near-perfect first season. The second season slightly less so. The cracks began to show during the third season and then it went right off the rails in the fourth.

If DSC can keep up where it's at right now for at least a few years, or do better, and expand its canvas, then I'll be at a point where I'll able to seriously wonder, "Do I think this is the best series?" At this point, I'm just really enjoying it and am happy to leave it at that.

Lol, no. Not after total 13 episodes it’s not. You may make an argument that it’s first 13 episodes are some of the best first 13 episodes of any Trek (Since TOS anyway), but no, it’s not the best Star Trek TV show of all time.

It's gotten a lot better but best...Not a chance! after only 13 episodes. The whole Klingon thing alone annoys me too much and how the show fits into canon is still to be seen. Also they need to vastly improve the SFX when it comes to ship to ship combat.

TNG S3-S7, Early VOY, ENT S3/4 and DS9 are still much better Star Trek to me.

I think many people are mislead by lots of special effects. TOS was great even with relatively bad special effects. What was important was the story. Put any Discovery story in environment with bad special effects and you would not get very good results.

It would look like a 1960s Dr. Who episode!

TOS did a good job with what it had to work with.

I don't think the story is bad but it does require a certain interaction with surroundings and characters that would be hard to pull off adequately in the 1960s. I'm enjoying the story.
