Best Star Trek computer game

A Final Unity is #1 for me because it's by far the best TNG game I think. The adventure game genre seems to fit Trek best overall to me.

Not to say that I don't like some of the other games too.

Yeah, I agree it is a genre that could be very good for trek... too bad there hasn't been any newer good trek adventures... it's such a fertile territory. But IMO it would be best if it could be blended with action as well, I mean, after all, the shows themselves were a mix of action and cerebral stuff weren't they... but most games don't give enough space to the cerebral part, so I would definitely like a new good trek adventure game, without a doubt. It’s almost like watching a new episode. :)
But the chances of that happening are kinda low…

I like Mass Effect. It's like how some people say Galaxy Quest is the best Trek movie, I'm gonna go on a limb and say Mass Effect is the best Trek game. Got a good mix of brains and kaboom, with space adventure, smart characters, exploring vast alien planets, etc.

Even more so Mass Effect 2 - maybe it's the larger ship, but seeing all the crew at work, and all the cool little things that make everything feel like you're on a living, breathing vessel just screams 'Trek' to me.

I'd love to see BioWare take all that and use it to make a similar game based on Trek - that'd probably end up being the definitive Trek game. But that's a pipe-dream, obviously, so let's not hold out for it... ;)

Totally agree about Mass Effect. It feels just right for a Star Trek game.

Not only the ship and crew, but the moral choices and the characters.

Favorite Interplay Game: Starfleet Academy

Favorite Spectrum HoloByte Game: A Final Unity because of an episodic format and the contribution of the entire TNG crew's voice talent (which was also great in the PC version of Generations).

Favorite Simon and Schuster Game: Tie - The Fallen + Borg

Favorite MicroPose Game: Birth of the Federation just gave a certain feeling that had been much more polished than some of their other work. Not to mention the concept of the Trek universe in a Civilization turn-by-turn gameplay.

Favorite Activision Game: Another tie - Armada; where do you go wrong with the voice work of Stewart (Picard), Dorn (Worf), Hertzler (Martok), and Cosby (Sela)? It was quite a thrill with the second attempt at a Trek RTS game (the first had been made by Interplay). That being said, Elite Force is an equal. A large modding community that flourished even after six/seven years of its' release date despite the sequel. RP mods were especially enjoyable, especially RPG-X.

Favorite Bethesda Game: Conquest; a small simple strategy game, despite the complete reuse of all the sound effects used in Legacy, Encounters, and Tactical Assault.

Least Favorite Game of all Time: Star Trek Legacy
Despite the Ultimate Universe mod, I still can't believe how bad Mad Doc Software (who had previously worked on Armada II) could screw (or f*ck) up a game (especially the PC port) so badly despite all of the demonstrations they had shown before. Sure, they got the voice over work of all five captains, but so briefly, it was completely pointless besides Stewart (when doesn't he do great voice over work?). Even the game/file structure was just a modified version of the Armada 2. Take my last sentence with a grain of salt because it was a rumor I had heard.

I guess I just have a fetish for the actual voice over work of the original characters.

Kadratis, good choices.

Although I might pick Klingon Academy over StarFleet Academy. SFA was supposed to be so much more than it turned out to be. But KA was also just sort of a total conversion w/ tweaks of the SFA game tech.

Just about every Trek adventure game has space combat. You also phaser bad guys on the ground occasionally. A Final Unity is no exception. I just think that AFU feels like a TNG episode, including its amount of action, and that really works for me.

I like DS9 The Fallen for the same reason. It feels like DS9 because DS9 was pretty action oriented later on and the game also has that explorable DS9 station and Defiant. The game also captures the dark atmosphere of the series. If only they had gotten more of the cast to sign on. I was annoyed that the cast wasn't willing to make the game better.

I want to say the same for Elite Force but the game made up too much nonsense just for the sake of having more dumb action. Gimped the Borg right off the bat with the stupid IMOD gun. Hazard team? Dumb. But they had the whole cast like TNG AFU and created the ship extremely well. I love games that let me wander Trek locations.

I love Legacy, but I'm playing it on the Xbox, not the PC. I understand that makes quite the difference.

I do find it ironic that what many consider to be one of the worst trek games of recent times is the only one to have all five captains. And immensely frustrating....

It just boils down to one thing: gameplay (PC wise). I will admit it was wonderful to finally have voice over work from the big five. But the lack of amount of v.o. work done for each character was disappointing.

The episode called Ambush had Avery Brooks read a few lines confronting Romulans, but not even feature him as a playable character! The same went for Mulgrew. Sure, she was an admiral giving orders and even still had a ship, but she too, was just another pawn. You can play as Janeway or Sisko in multiplayer/quick match, but even then there's hardly any v.o. to be found.

It was basically a game for Bakula, Shatner (of course ), and Stewart to shine. Maybe because they spent too much money on Shatner to afford Brooks and Mulgrew for longer than an hour in a sound booth? Pft. :shifty:

Having read this thread - have finally plumped for Legacy at a cheapo £4. Its actually ok! Gameplay reminds me of ST:Online, which I wasn't a big fan of either. WIll give it a couple of missions. Am desperate for something new and Trek related! :)

Totally agree. Which is why feel so frustrated. I get impression there's a consensus emerging here Legacy is NOT one of the best Trek games, yet it's the only one with all the principal captain actors/characters we love BUT such a wasted opportunity.

Based partly because of this thread, I purchased Starfleet COmmand II EaW. I forgot how much I liked that game.

My fave is still "A Final Unity" with Elite Force 1 and 2, Bridge Commander and DS9: Harbinger being close runners up. Armada 1 gets an honorable mention.

It really is an alright game. It's certainly not the greatest thing to ever come out, but I've never really understood the extreme levels of hate that it gets. There's lots of aspects that could afford to be improved, but I've always thought that it's a good looking fairly fun little game. If nothing else, a lot of my disappointment with it comes from the fact that I read an article where they had all these big plans where they wanted to do all these cool things with it (upgrading/ buying a new ship throughout the game) and then those big, cool things weren't even part of the game.

To keep the thread on track, I think my two favorite games are DS9's The Fallen, SC: Orion Pirates and Armada 2 (never played the original). It's been a long time since I've played it, but I remember being quite fond of New Worlds (Ok, so apparently I have a thing for games that everyone else hates).

Well you could get new and better ships throughout the game. And I did like the story, but other then that Legacy was a disappointment. Of course thats only my opinion, and I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone else.

I don't hate Legacy, I just find it clunky.

The fact that it's acceptable for a Trek game is telling - but compare most Star Trek games to comparable titles, and they don't stand up much. At all.

Franchise games can shine. I offer KOTOR and Butcher Bay as evidence.

Yeah, but they way it worked in the final version was that you would just be put in charge of each generation's ship as you progressed through the game. The original concept (I'll try to find an internet link, I only read this in a magazine before the release) was that you would get money for each mission, and you could either upgrade your current ship or purchase a new ship.

Hello All, 1rst post!

I have played all the mentioned games and have enjoyed them all especially Armada.

I am amused it took so long for someone to mention STO and that it was just one person. As the "current" Star Trek game, I play it. However I feel the companies management is way too spineless and caves to their dozen or so forum whiners all the time ruining the game. It is populated by ships and costumes from all Trek eras, yet some things like the Iconic TOS Constitution are taboo at end game thanks to these loud dozen. (Even though you can get the TOS Bridge and uniforms) Highly hippocritic management will ultimately doom this game sadly.

Hopefully new management will pick up this game and slap down these whiners like Bioware did when these same people complained on their forums about "fixing" their rail shooter in the upcoming SWTOR.

I remember loving the heck out of "A Final Unity".

Is there any way to play a version of that now? I bet I even have the old disc, but it was DOS run as I recall.
