Best "space" movies

easy enough or is it..

To narrow it down what are your picks for best space movie in the vain of , sunshine, moon, solaris.
This is kind of intended to be a discussion about real world based fiction, just to kind of narrow it down. so personally I'd leave out aliens and the like. but thats up to you.:)

I preferred 2010 (but then I'm a massive fan of The Scheiderman)

2001 is the fairly obvious choice.

I would make honorable mentions of the less-acclaimed Outland and From the Earth to the Moon, which are favorites of mine that will certainly otherwise be overlooked in this thread.

I would also tip my hat to 2010 not necessarily as a movie, but definitely as a space movie. In recognition of the effort they made to depict things like aerobraking, spacewalking, etc. in a reasonably accurate way.

Solaris has aliens. Maybe not Mr. Spock, but aliens, if of the numinous variety that 2001: A Space Odyssey also has.

Also my choice would be 2001, but if I can't have a movie with aliens in it... um... Moon.

My god I'm obvious, eh? Okay I'm going to also mention Fritz Lang's Woman on the Moon just to be different, so there! It's a pretty important and overlooked film, though, one of the first to aim for a degree of realism in depicting space travel and may have influenced the rocket countdown (or so it's claimed).

I bow to the superior cool of the first man to mention Silent Running.

Damn, I forgot that one for a second.

That Tim Robbins flick about Mars. Um, Red Mars? Don't remember. And Apollo 13. Destination: Moon. 2001, 2010. And there was a tv special movie filmed documentary style about a Mars mission. It had pretty good moments, although I've never seen it start to finish.

From the Earth to the Moon, 2010, 2001, Outland, Silent Running, Apollo 13 and an old time favorite of mine that was close to the mark for its time Marooned.

Vons

I'm a little surprised - and gratified - to see the Outland love here. I thought I was the only one!

I know they say that it's just High Noon in space, but I found the space elements to be nicely done. I particularly like that Sean Connery knows way in advance that goons are on the way to get him, because as many science fiction films forget, things in space are far away from each other and it takes a long time to get places.

Destination Moon
2001: A Space Odyssey
Apollo 13
Moon
From the Earth to The Moon (HBO miniseries)
The Right Stuff

OK..."realistic/real world":

2001 (of course!!)
Solaris (Tarkovsky)
The Right Stuff
Silent Running
Apollo 13
Moon

The best "alien" space movie for me has to be "Alien".

The best space "opera" for me has to be TWOK.

I love it that Mysterion mentioned The Right Stuff - I love that film.
