Best Space-Based Sci-Fi Shows in the Last 25 Years

I'm going to re-watch DS9 since it's getting so much love here. I don't have fond memories of it, but I'll give it another chance.

As for folks who think Firefly is overrated or there isn't enough there, I suppose it's all according to personal tastes, but I think the characters are more developed in that one brief season than any were on the run of Voyager (except maybe the doctor).

To the Farscape lovers, yeah, I hear you, but I don't know what I could drop from the top 5 to make room for them.

I'd dump B5 in favor of Farscape, on every front - production design, direction, writing, acting.

Neither DS9 or the other post-TNG Trek series belong on the list. "Replicative fading."

I don't know these discussions are kind of pointless I think they are all #1 (including Andromeda) just for thinking outside the box and having an outer space setting.

Sorry- G'Kar and Londo were superbly performed. As were many other characters in the show. And just a simple thing like having a copy of Universe Today (ala USA Today) as a prop shows how much thought they put into production design. Not to mention those sexy Star Furies. And while the dialogue might have gotten overblown at times, episodes like GROPOS or Day of the Dead, The Rock Cried Out No Hiding Place-you just can't justify the idea that the writing was lacking. Farscape was, IMO, even more up and down in that respect. Still love them both, though.

Damn straight. In the end, they fed our desire.

I can't believe I'm the only person who thought about bringing 'kids shows' into the equation.

Space Cases had writing and production pedigree on par with some of the stuff that's been mentioned thus far, and even referenced B5, so I'm really surprised I was the first - and only - person to mention it.

I would dump Firefly from the list... it was good, but one season is hardly enough to judge. And I think they're better shows. Farscape should easily be on the list. And I would swap out TNG for DS9.

And, actually, I'm not sure if Doctor Who belongs... not because it's not great, but is it really "space based"? Sure, sometimes we are on an alien world, but, spend a LOT of time on Earth. So, really, isn't the show more "time travel based"?

TNG
DS9
B5:Crusade
nuBSG
Starship Troopers:Roughnecks(animated series)

I don't know how anyone can include TNG on any of these lists considering such outrageously bad episodes such as Code of Honor.

Interesting also that not one Trek fan included Voyager.

TNG had to be included because Star Trek was successfully returned to television as a weekly series. But, I agree there were episodes that were bad over the seven years.

It's personal opinion of course but TNG episodes like The Child, Justice, Skin of Evil, and Sub Rosa are virtually unwatchable for me today whereas there are very few such horrible examples in DS9 and DS9 unlike TNG has lasted better as time has passed .

Absolutely agree, DS9 was and is a better Star Trek. I placed TNG before DS9 only because of chronological order.

1. Babylon 5
2. Farscape
3. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
4. Star Trek: The Next Generation
5. Battlestar Galactica (2003)

1 ) Babylon 5
2) Farscape
3) Battlestar Galactica 2003
4) Star Trek TNG and Star Trek DS9 ( I see them a combination )
5) Firefly
