There was discussion of this only a few weeks ago, I think, though wasn't around for most of it.

Voted for City on the Edge of Forever which is my top favorite but rounding out my top 5 from Season 1 would be:

Balance of Terror
The Corbomite Manuever
The Devil in the Dark
This Side of Paradise

That´s a seriously tough choice to make, there are several great episodes I like equally well. But I´ll go with "Where No Man Has Gone Before" - BoT shouldn´t win with too big a margin :)

Though definitely one of my favorite Season One episodes, I find myself unable to vote for "Balance of Terror" because it's too derivative, IMHO. As an analogy to The Enemy Below and other WWII themes it's fantastic, but Star Trek wasn't just about the visualization of analogies in a futuristic concept.

My choice is the first episode produced for the regular series, "The Corbomite Maneuver"
  • A "first" (pun intended) to set the style and tone for the series without the need to conduct additional "soul searching" as we've seen in later spin-offs
  • delivers "Where No Man Has Gone Before" right from the start by carrying us into the unknown and uncharted regions of space
  • shows us how to deal with an overwhelming adversary - by using brains and imagination :)
  • great morale that "appearances can be deceiving"

I honestly can't answer this. There are just too many excellent choices in Season 1. I'm paralyzed with indecision.

5 would be easier.

But I will go with "The Devil in the Dark"

It's what Trek is all about. We have an evil killing monster at the beginning,
At the end we have an intelligent friend.

Kirk transforms beautifully in this episode, as do we the viewers.

Balance of Terror, Arena, City, Archons, and Space Seed are also contenders

The Cage.

I always wondered if The Cage should be counted as part of any season, because it really is different from the production run?

Since it has a longer run-time, perhaps we should count it as the first Star Trek movie!

:techman:

So many great episodes in season one, I voted for The City on the Edge of Forever, but it was a tough decision.

Just two short years after the greatness that was season one, we would get The Way to Eden, And The Children Shall Lead, and That Which Survives.
