Best of 2016: Fan Productions

We're officially halfway through the final month of 2016, which seems like a good time to start a Best of 2016 thread. Despite everything that's gone on (the Axanar lawsuit turns one year old at the end of the month; the Guidelines are nearing six months in force), it's actually been a pretty good year for Trek fan shows -- especially if you're into the smaller shows that are pure labors of love. STR has an archive of everything that came out this year, if you need a refresher.

So, what was your favorite fan-made adventure released in the past year? Give a link if you're feeling generous, for anyone who might have missed it!

(P.S. If you happen to be a fan producer, feel free to name your favorite 2016 episode of your own series, but then be sure to also name your favorite thing that came out this year that you didn't make.)

I'll start:

Favorite episode I didn't make: Star Trek: Horizon. I've been frustrated for years by the lack of love for Enterprise in fan filmdom, but I never expected to have my prayers answered in such a massively satisfying way. Incredible work by Tommy Kraft. However, one caveat: I haven't seen Star Trek: Aurora's "Mudd In Your I" yet, and -- based on how much I enjoyed Aurora's pilot -- I fully expect "Mudd" to be just as good or better than Horizon. (Horizon link) (Aurora link)

Favorite episode I did make: I mean... I made an episode of Starship Excelsior this year starring Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, and Robin Curtis, so the answer here it pretty obvious. Working with the legends was not just the highlight of my year; it was one of the highlights of my life. We won't be doing it again, because we respect CBS and the guidelines are clear about this, but I'm so grateful we had the chance to do it before the guidelines came out. Hopefully the end result was as enjoyable for the fans. (Excelsior 50th Anniversary link)

The guidelines are clearly suggestions. If anyone ever gets an awesome opportunity like that again, in the limited time we have left with these wonderful people, I would hope that the reward would be worth the (IMO) minimal risk!

I'm not a fanfilm producer but this I pretty much agree with! Horizon for me gave closure to the Enterprise story in a satisfactory way wuthout featuring any of it's main cast and Excelsior WAS the anniversary for me - it especially highlighted the Uhura character in a way we have never seen before. Recommended to all fans.

I'm looking forward to see what 2017 brings, even with guidelines there is promising stuff in the pipeline.
