Best HBO Series

Carnivale was their best offering, with Deadwood and Rome close seconds.

The Sopranos was awesome, of course, but very uneven for a couple of seasons.

Boardwalk Empire hit a new stride this past week. The scene with Chalky interrogating the KKK guy was brilliant television.

Agreed--I was wondering when Michael K. Williams' character was finally going to get some screen time in this series. The first episode he had like one line, the second one he didn't appear at all, but in the past two he's been fairly prominent. :techman:

The Wire without a doubt, closely followed by The Sopranos. I don't think any other show has been able to portray urban decay and the failure of social institutions as poignantly or intelligently as The Wire did. Truly outstanding television that never underestimates the intellect of the viewer.

Honourable mentions to Deadwood, Carnivale and Six Feet Under.
Your choices mirror mine very closely.

Except for the fact that, due to a variety of reasons, mostly connected to the THE SOPRANOS´ specific strategies of framing various forms of violence, I have been unable to develop any deeper emotional involvement with this particular production.
Although, on an intellectual level, I do of course recognize and acknowledge the series´ narrative and cinematic qualities.

I hadn't even heard about this show until this post but the mere imagine of Michael K. Williams (Omar is one of my favorite characters on The Wire) interrogating a KKK guy is enough to get me to check the show out. Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald, Stephen Graham (as Al Capone!), and the premise adds more to the appeal. I've seen the first two episodes and I already love this show. And I haven't gotten to the aforementioned scene!

Six Feet Under. Has its ordinary moments but it also has some of the best characters ever to appear on TV, IMO - even when you wanted to reach into the screen and slap them for being idiots, almost all of them were rarely anything other than utterly compelling. And the finale is absolutely perfect.

I couldn't get into The Sopranos or Rome, and The Wire was jerked around in scheduling here even more badly than Six Feet Under was (which made it difficult to keep up with it). Sex and the City did nothing whatever for me (to put it politely) and Dexter didn't grab me (surprising, since I really liked Michael C Hall's character in Six Feet Under). Haven't had the opportunity or the interest to check out the others mentioned so far.

I really need to see Deadwood. I love westerns.
Just be ready for some of the most eloquent profanity you might ever hear.

One of the very few American tv-shows where I needed subtitles to really understand what was going on. :D

I put the subtitles on, too. :rommie: Sometimes, the colorful metaphors were so archaic that I literally had never encountered them (did they make them up or find them in the written record somehow?)

I've added to my list of shows to watch, based what was mentioned here in the forum:
*Carnivale
*Six Feet Under
*Deadwood (the 1st season, which I currently have in my possession; just finding the time to watch it!)
*The Wire
*Boardwalk Empire
