Best HBO Series

True Blood IMO. It's a very good series.

I tried to like True Blood - I really did. I'm not sure if it's the actors or the overall tone of the series, but I don't care for it at all. I wish the series had more of the tone of the opening credits, which are phenomenally good.

I don't have HBO and haven't in many years. But I do have the John Adams DVD. Awesome series!

Not TV & Media, BTW?
Indeed :)

Sorry - I don't mosey out of SF&F and TNZ much so I completely forgot there was a TV & Media forum now. :o

The Wire is my favourite, by far.

Then Oz, Rome, and The Sopranos, in that order.

To be completely fair, though--Oz finishes second mostly for sentimental reasons. Rome and The Sopranos are better TV series, by any objective standard. But Oz was the first HBO series I ever watched, and it inspired me to write a Star Trek fanfic series set in a Federation prison.

I also really enjoyed The Larry Sanders Show, back in the day.

Six Feet Under is probably my favourite series of all time. Certainly my favourite dramatic series, at least. I've rewatched it three times now and appreciate different aspects of it every time, depending on my own life situation at the time. It speaks to so much, and the characters are so richly developed.

Having just finished watching The Wire for the first time, I'm inclined to automatically say it's my favorite, but I absolutely love every bit of Oz as well. They're equally excellent shows.

The only ones I ever liked were Oz, In Treatment, Big Love, John Adams, Rome, Band of Brothers, and Tales From the Crypt.

I have nothing but loathing for The Sopranos, Real Time with Bill Maher, and Sex and the City.

Of the ones I did like - Oz is easily my favorite with In Treatment coming in second.

Big Love suffers at times from the plot moving too slowly.

John Adams suffers from all the odd camera work - seriously, it's distracting.

Rome suffers because it's second season was a real letdown after the awesomeness of the first.

Band of Brothers
was too short - it really needed to be at least twice as long because of all the different characters we meet.

Tales from the Crypt had some truly great episodes, but unfortunately they were sprinkled in amongst a lot of rather bland ones.

Oz just went on a season or two too long imo. The Wire was perfect that way.

I have to say that Carnivale is my favorite. It's a real shame that it only lasted two seasons rather than the six that were planned for.

The Wire out of what I've seen. Band of Brothers was excellent as well, although not a full series of course.

I really need to see Deadwood. I love westerns.

I hate Westerns and even I fell in love with Deadwood. Truly an amazing show, I still need to watch past the first season.

I've only seen the first season of Deadwood, but it was enjoyable.I liked the first season of Big Love too, but I don't know if Five showed it after that. Carnivale was brilliant, I may have to watch it again soon. True Blood is very good. I couldn't get in to The Wire or Sopranos or Six Feet Under but I will have to give them a try again in the future.

I pretty much like all HBO series. There is only one show I just couldn't get in to, and funnily enough that was HBO's biggest hit: The Sopranos.

Six Feet Under has to be my favorite. A funny, moving, poignant, excellent series. But I love Band of Brothers, The Wire, Deadwood, True Blood, Rome, Curb... and Flight of the Conchords as well.

The Sopranos, Deadwood and Oz in that order. I wish Deadwood had a proper ending though.

Rome and Curb Your Enthusiasm are the two that I've really enjoyed. John Adams was alright. The others, I just haven't been able to get into. When I watch them I know that they are great series, written and acted well, but they just don't grab my attention or urge me to come back and watch more. I haven't seen Six Feet Under or Carnivale yet, so I do plan to at least give those a try.
