Best Game Plot

My list of favorite game plots:

Deus Ex -- Here's a game that did an excellent job of taking most conspiracy theories you've heard of, and weaved them into a cohesive plot that didn't sound completely insane or outlandish. Considering this game came out pre-9/11, it's actually a bit creepy how prescient it was: a world at war with terrorism, out-of-control gas prices, incognito police states, etc

Yeah Deus Ex hands down. I mean I don't think any video game actually made me curious about the origin of the modern banking system. I think it was certainly the most sophisticated story ever written for a video game. To me playing the game felt very much like watching a good cyberpunk movie. Hey did you know that the twin towers were actually missing in the Manhattan skyline in the game?

Deus Ex is another one; I still hold out hope that we will get a Deus Ex 3 some day.
That would be great...so long as it isn't another Invisible War-type crapfest and is more in keeping with the excellence of the original.

DX is the only game I've played that actually made me start reading up on the real-world stuff it was based on / mentioned. On that basis alone it's an easy winner for me.

Uh, we're getting another Deux Ex this year. Unfortunately it's a prequel to the original, so meh....

Best plots I can recall:
-Mafia
-KotoR
-Mass Effect (even though it was basically supposed to be KotoR 3, they managed to create a well fleshed out universe with loads of backstory and unique aliens that didn't seem rehashed)
-Half Life 2
-Max Payne (will be interesting to see how they change things in #3)
-Freespace series
-World in Conflict
-GTA series from 3 forward

In no perticular order:
- Wing Commander saga
- Mass Effect
- Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2
- a ton of Final Fantasy games (VII, X, XII)

No video game plot has ever pulled me in like the Wing Commander series did, in particular I, II, and III. Sure the story was derivative and not terribly original but for some reason I got really invested in the plot.

And no video game has ever made me more upset than Wing Commander III(I think it was III) where Hobbes story takes an abrupt left turn and the result of that action.

I'll join in for the praise of the first Metal Gear Solid on the PS - tight plot, great character interaction, twists that kept you guessing and a tense buildup to the final battle. And it was moving at times too - who could forget the final moments of Sniper Wolf and the Cyborg Ninja? The sequels were ruined by too much self-indulgence and overstepped the mark.

Of all the Final Fantasy games, I choose VI as the best - the characters were well-developed with great backstories which is impressive for such a big cast. The villain was insanely brilliant, and the plot, about the destruction and reparation of an entire world, still feels like the most epic of the FF series. VII had great characters too, and a great villain, but some of the confusing developments of the second half were a let-down.

I've always had a soft spot for Gregory Horror Show, a cartoon survival horror game in which the player is trapped in a hotel full of loony residents. The plot was quite similar in some ways to Nightmare Before Christmas and similar movies.

Yeah, it was III. And yeah, the thing with Hobbes pissed me off as well.

Another vote for Deus Ex - I would have liked to have seen it adapted for a movie - shame it never came to light. Who would you have cast as JC Denton, though?

Apparently the absence of the Twin Towers in the New York levels was a programming omission at the time - it was allegedly too much for the computers at the time (year 2000) to recreate it in-game, and so Warren Spector made the off-hand excuse that they were destroyed in a terror attack at some point in the early 21st Century. Spooky, eh?

I also loved Knights of the Old Republic, even though its basic premise owes a not insignifcant amount to Planescape: Torment (which for me has my all-time favourite game plot). ;)

I played number 3 before 2 so it may not have had as much effect for me. It was still a shock though.

Christian Bale would probably be the favorite of majority here but my choice would be Keanu Reeves.

Somebody made this nice Deus Ex trailer featuring Christian Bale and music/sound from the game.

Very spooky indeed. On the morning of 9/11 I was in AP English and I actually thought of Deus Ex immediately when the teacher turned on the news.

All my other favorites have already been mentioned, but I have a soft spot for MYST, before the series went waist-deep into mystical mumbo-jumbo, anyways. I liked how the plot unfurled via exploration and examination, rather than exposition dump cutscenes and the universe is rather cool and original. The novels expanded things out rather nicely.

Funny you mention that - I'd have cast Christian Bale as Walton Simons, myself.

Resident Evil brings so many happy tears to my eyes. Everything about it, from the characters to the monsters to the storyline to the music. The timeline is rather messed up but whatever, I love it to death.

Uh, I know. My hope that it's not crappy remains, though.

I remember talking about this with a mate ages ago (the same person who made me aware of DX's existence, in fact) and we wondered what ending they'd go with for a movie. We never got around to discussing casting, though. :D

I read that somewhere a while back. Definitely creepy.
