Best Game Plot

So often we look for gameplays but personally I love a good story too and all to often we get hacks writing utter crap but now and again you get a great story. So in your opinion what games do you feel have had the best game plots ?

Metal Gear Solid for me will always be near the top as the Playstation 1 hit was the first game IMO to have a hollywood type story that depsite being outlandish still made a good balance though it's a pity the sequel MGS 2 went south with the plot.

I think GTA 4 more such a big game created a well jelled story, which would be nice to see in a GTA film one day.

My list of favorite game plots:

Deus Ex -- Here's a game that did an excellent job of taking most conspiracy theories you've heard of, and weaved them into a cohesive plot that didn't sound completely insane or outlandish. Considering this game came out pre-9/11, it's actually a bit creepy how prescient it was: a world at war with terrorism, out-of-control gas prices, incognito police states, etc.

Homeworld -- I understand this was originally supposed to be a BSG game, but they couldn't get the license for it. The game is all the better for it, to be honest. The tale of the Kushan people crossing the galaxy to reclaim their homeland from the Taiidan is epic in both scope and execution. The story is powerful but communicated in rather minimalistic fashion, with animatic cutscenes and radio chatter.

Chrono Cross -- Well, there's a whole thread about this game and its predecessor already. :)

I love games with a good story line and I especially love the fact that lately game developers have been trying to include a good story line.

That said the games whose stories I like the most are (to some) some of the least liked story lines.

Halo - I admit the games themselves don't necessarily have all that good of a story, but since I read all of the Halo books those augment it enough for me that I am loving that universe almost as much as Trek.

Resident Evil - LOVE IT. And Resident Evils 4 and 5 have added IMO, a good amount of depth to it and some time to fill-in between CV and 4. Here's hoping more books on this come out too.

Some of the plots I enjoyed weren't necessarily original, but I felt were told well.

Mass Effect
Wing Commander (as a series in general)
Dreamweb

There are a couple of others, but the names escape me at the moment.

resi 2 and 3 had a pretty good plot to them
final fantasy 7 was pretty good that was my first consul game

Agreed. It's very hard to beat Homeworld for the sheer epicness of the plot, and the way it was told was extremely well-done.

Another of my favourites is most of the Half-Life saga. Very well told and immersive, and the first-person view really makes you care for the characters.

Another vote for Mass Effect here. Great story, it really pulled me in and I enjoyed it immensely.

Word ;)

Gonna toss in some votes for Xenosaga as well. Such a great, complex story.

Deus Ex is another one; I still hold out hope that we will get a Deus Ex 3 some day.

FFX's plot is still able to hold my attention even after almost a decade and well over a dozen plays.

The Metal Gear Solid Saga , I cant view it as just one game ;), while a convoluted mess is still impressively interwoven and through some miracle was actually tied up very well in the end

Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic: who would have thought a game based on the star wars universe would have a better plot than the movies themselves

^ I have, and they're very good, but Gordon is so central to the Half-Life mythology, I don't see how a full-length movie could work without him.
