I realized I forgot a few shows like Barbarians aka Barbaren Fernsehserie the 2020 German historical period war drama, if you include anime there are tons of stuff not on this list

Are these classic shows that I should be familiar with? Netflix has a number of shows on right now that are really good and should be included.

Personally I feel people should know what 'anime' means, be aware the Japanese have their own cartoon shows or people should know a single French film or German film.

Are these classic shows that I should be familiar with?

I'm not sure maybe, I think they are modern and not actually classics say like Shogun the 1980s miniseries. I understand why people don't know foreign shows, I mean you have stuff like Sopranos, or GoT, Classic StarTreks, Xfiles, Simpsons, Law & Order or Roots or Dallas made in the US and dominating tvs across the globe for decades. US movies dominated the world but Avengers was probably the last true blockbuster, on tv and websites you had constant hype about "Game of Thrones" and tv was dominated by political debates and inauguration and political scandals and Soccer world Cups you could perhaps be forgiven for not knowing anything else going on. I'm no expert on foreign films or anime but I know at least a few.
I understand how people don't know about these other over genres. I understasnd why they never watched media from overseas the Tv and movies were consumed with all the hype around Disney, Marvel Bros and Marvel these past years. I feel people should at least know the term 'anime' what the Japanese call their hand-drawn toons and computer animation cartoons originating from Japan. People might not know one foreign language show but if you follow media and arts then people maybe should probably also be familiar with one German or one single French film, even something ancient old and classic like Nosferatu or Le Voyage dans la Lune because without these old pioneers and inventors of film the California movie industry might not exist today.

Hollywood had a rough sales year with the Corona for sure. Hollywood, it probably already hit its peak before all those Weinstein scandals broke. I feel the tv studios are changing, a lot of the shows were already filmed in Canada, the films like Avengers were probably the last big Hollywood Blockbuster for some time. The cinematic world and tv world is changing for sure. A lot of it has gone online with Apple tv, Netflix, Hulu etc and other streaming services. Manga and Anime was always popular in its own way but has become a big thing again, it always had a cult following but with Hollywood going bust you have productions these going overseas, I'm not a fan of gamer products getting made into movies but Japan has been a dominant force in gaming. There is video game stuff picked up by foreign Studios like Sony or Pathé or Cité du Cinéma like Mortal Kombat is now filmed in Australia and you now have Manga comics outselling the entire of Marvel and DC, the DC Universe is now hit by Major Layoffs you also have stuff like the Japanese animated Demon Slayer The Movie outselling the entire of Hollywood in worldwide cinema sales.

I feel also some people find the tv and film from overseas kind of refreshing, in some US film and tv you now have constant agendas or political messages pushed into shows back and forth between left and right with little middle ground or centrist moderate thought, something is pro-Anarchy or pro-statism or anti-socialism, a show is political pro-gay or anti-gay something is pro-religion or anti-religion, pro-muslim or anti-muslim it is pro-Republican anti-Republican pro-Democrat anti-Democrat I guess politically with Hollywood producers and writers pushing their own narcissistic agenda into shows maybe some people just find it tiresome. Asia is different while the South Koreans make their own shows without pushing Alt-Right characters or Marxism, people often watch Asian cinema for its pure entertainment, they can handle politics sometimes in their movies and shows but don't care so much for agendas like the media of the West and Asia make their own product without apologizing for being Asians and I guess people can find that kind of refreshing. The S.Korean movie industry is excellent, their tv and movies productions are very well done and I would highly recommend it. They seem to have big a following these days just like HongKong cinema was a huge seller in the 1970s and 1980s. The show Money Heist was one of the most watched Netflix shows in America, I don't remember the exact numbers but A LOT of people in America watched this series. The US has 40+ million people who speak Spanish at home and Money Heist was a Spainsh language series so maybe that helped its success.

I guess this is highly subjective and based on where someone would be living, because I know lots of Canadian shows would be considered foreign in some markets. But as for one of the bests? Has to be the german series Dark. I see you left it out, but maybe that was done on purpose as it's more well-known?

Another really good one would be the Icelandic series Trapped.

I confess, I immediately thought of the original 1960s version of THE AVENGERS, particularly the Diana Rigg years.

Or are we only talking modern TV shows here?

My first thought was Monty Python but OP is talking about foreign language series.

The OP, who it looks isn't going to be around anymore, missed two of my recent favorites, La Revolution and Diablero.
I didn't vote in the poll since the only show they listed I've seen is Tribes of Europa.

I'm a huge fan of Death Note, and the original Japa version is much better compared with other remakes.

In my opinion, the original has more details. A long time ago I was watching the CONAN tv show by germans, the TV show was really good, and it was unfortunate that they didn't continue the show for next season. Yesterday my friend sent me the list from the authorized german sites with the Renewed TV Shows in 2022, and I was happy to see that they announced the new season of Conan.

For anyone who likes horror the French series Marianne (which is still on Netflix I believe) is superb!

Bumping this...
Money Heist: Korea dropped last week on Netflix. I didn't realize it would be coming out this quickly.

I was hoping they would change it up a bit, but so far, it seems like a straight re-make of the original. Even the characters' code names are the same. Wiki says it's based in the same universe as the Spanish production, but apparently not.

It's not bad so far.. I just wish it wasn't quite so note for note.

I'm really enjoying Harrow, about a British pathologist (played by Ioan Gruffudd) working in Queensland who solves crimes. Australian ABC airs it but Hulu has been streaming it after the seasons have finished there. Sort of reminds me of all the consultant crime-fighting shows like Castle, but at least Harrow's actually supposed to be there.
