Best episodes of SG-1

I have been watching SG-1 from the beginning, as I finally got into the franchise by watching Universe. As with most series there are widely acclaimed episodes considered the best of the series.

example: TNG - Best of both Worlds, Yesterdays enterprise, The inner Light etc

What do people think are the best episodes of SG-1 so I can keep a lookout for them while watching the series!

A few years back, Scifi channel did a "viewer's choice" marathon.

Unsurprisingly, the last episode shown (ranked #1) was "Window of Opportunity".

That was a great episode but a bit too comical for me, it's great on its own but it doesn't really capture the spirit of the series.

I forget what the episode was called I think it was season 2
Anyhow here's how it goes, Jack, Tealc, Carter, Jackson go to this planet. They find Apophis crashed and injured, seems a Goauld civil war kicked off.
They take his injured body back to Earth where he hopes to find sanctuary and he wants a fresh new host in exchange for technology, info, phaser guns etc. Apophis' cunning dark side comes out as he now has lured the other system lords to come after him on Earth and the other bad guys start bashing down the Stargate, things start to heat up. In the end you actually start feeling sorry for the host who awakes dazed and confused and dying in the SGC infirmary.
The ep ends with SG1 chucking his dead body back through the gate so the other system lords can feast on it.
The ep would have made the perfect final resolution, too bad they brought him back and made the Apophis story jump the shark.

^ That was "Serpent's Song", AFAIK.

My favorite episode was "Lifeboat" where Daniel becomes the 'host' to several people rescued from a crashed ship - their minds were uploaded into his body because the ship's cryogenic systems were failing and it was the only way to save them.

The wonderful thing about SG1 is the great variety, which makes this simple question kind of overwhelming.

There are the slam bang action episodes, which are about as about as substantial as potato chips but nearly as much fun. Most all of the midseason and season cliffhangers/openers, like The Lost City or The New Order or Full Circle/Fallen/Homecoming or Summit/Last Stand are quite fun.

But SG1 is essentially a comedy which is why a flat out comedy episode like Window of Opportunity probably is the best single episode. Other great comdies are Urgo, 1969, The Other Guys and the one that was robbed of a Hugo, 200.

Then there are the character driven episodes. For Jack, there are A Hundred Days, Solitudes, Learning Curve and Abyss. For Daniel, there are Torment of Tantalus and Forever in a Day. For T'ealc, there is perhaps the very best character episode in ten years, The Changeling. Cameron Mitchell had Collateral Damage. Even Jonas Quinn got Prophecy. (No, Carter didn't get a really good character episode. Amanda Tapping had to get another series to really stretch. Ascension was the closest, I suppose.)

Then there are the terrific weird, campy episodes. Stuff like Hathor, Holiday, Brief Candle, Prometheus,The Ties that Bind.

There are some serious political type episodes. The Unas trilogy, The First Ones/Beast of Burden/Enemy Mine. The Icon/Ethon duology. The Other Side. Crusade.

There were the episodes designed to pacify Michael Shanks, who is apparently a terminal diva, but they were pretty good. Lifeboat, Legacy, Absolute Power.

And last, there were even some nifty little sf stories. Learning Curve, Revisions, A Matter of Time, 2010.

Pick the category that seems most appealing and try the episodes in it.

Well I have seen alot of these, I just got into SG-1 after watching Universe, I got all 10 series and started from the start. I have just reached the end of season 5 and will be starting the season finale after this post.

Window of oportunity was great and I loved 2010, I also liked the one in season 1 where Daniel Jackson goes to an alternate earth which gets wiped out.

1969 was a good laugh too.

This series is really diverse and I look forward to what is to come

While not the greatest or most thought provoking sci-fi to be seen on any screen, I have to confess that I really liked "Wormhole Xtreme!" and "200".

I wouldn't recommend either of these for cold viewing though since they need some context of the earlier episodes for some of it to work.

I haven't watched SG-1 in quite a while, but "Window of Opportunity" was the first episode to pop into my mind when I saw this thread.

O'neill's going nuts rant is classic. :guffaw:

I'm a pretty big fan of the episodes where SG-1 lands on planet hell and find anubis.... can't recall the episode name or the system lord who ran the joint, but he decided to mirror his rule after satan IIRC

Well I have reached episode 10 of season 6 and I am really enjoying this show. My favourite episodes so far are:

1. There But For the Grace of God (S.1)
2. Serpent's Song (S.2)
3. 1969 (S.2)
4. Pretense (S.3)
5. A hundered Days (S.3)
6. Upgrades (S.4)
7. Window of Oportunity (S.4)
8. 2010 (S.4)
9. 2001(S.5)
10. Wormhole X-treme (S.5)
11. Shadow Play (S.6)
12. The Other Guys (S.6)

The first few episodes of Season 6 were a bit shaky but then the series righted itself. Jonas Quinn is starting to grow on me.

I've been watching the series from the first episode onward, and am about halfway through season 6.

So, these are my favorites out of the bunch:

Cold Lazarus
There But For the Grace of God
Serpent's Song
Foothold
Shades of Grey
Window of Opportunity
2010
Between Two Fires (I think this one is my personal favorite so far)
Abyss
The Other Guys

Each season seems to get better as I get farther along, too.

What do you mean Carter didn't get a good character episode? The Tok'ra (2x11/12), Jolinar's Memories (3x12/13) and even Death Knell (7x16) are what I would call good character episodes for Carter.
SG-1, in my opinion, was great because of it's lighthearted side, so humor driven episodes like Urgo (3x16), Window of Opportunity (4x6), 200 (10x6), or Upgrades are my personal favorites as well as the season 8 finale Moebius.
Other episodes I would recommend:

Abyss (6x6)
The Fifth Race (2x15)
The Quest (10x10)
Shades of Grey (3x18)
Absolute Power (4x17)

I could go on for days, but I'll leave it at that. :D

For most shows I have a standing top 10. For this one, I have a standing top 20.

1. Reckoning/Threads
2. Lost City
3. The Torment of Tantalus
4. Meridian
5. The Shroud
6. The Fifth Race
7. Window of Opportunity
8. The Pegasus Project
9. Redemption
10. Dominion
11. Exodus/Enemies
12. Summit/Last Stand
13. Children of the Gods
14. Heroes
15. Full Circle
16. The Tok'ra
17. There But For the Grace of God
18. Abyss
19. Gemini
20. 2010/2001

I never thought of "Upgrades" as a "humorous" episode. There are some jokes in it, yes, but it didn't seem to go for the yuks like "Window of Opportunity," "Wormhole X-Treme," or "200".

And "Ugo."

Ugh.

That is my least favorite episode in the whole series. I don't find it humorous. I find it pathetic. <shrug>
