The Devil in the Dark. It's my favorite in all of Trek, I think. If I could only have one episode to watch whenever I wanted and never watch any of the others again, this is what I'd pick. When I think about what I remember best about getting caught up in Trek when I was a kid watching in syndication in the 70s, this is the episode that comes to mind. It's what Trek is all about and it's all Trek should be.

So many wonderful episodes meant a really tough choice for me. I, finally, decided to go with Balance of Terror, because it was just a little bit better than the others.

Balance of Terror. On the surface, a typical warship vs. submarine retelling; but it introduced the Romulans and set up some interesting dynamics for Spock to resolve over the run of Trek. :thumbsup:

Nope - I love it too - probably Roddenberry's best ever Trek writting - even if it isn't clear that Pike ever escaped. Though Pike's incredible sexism is a problem, even if it is part of his depression.

I voted for The Cage. All of these are quite good, though, except The City On The Edge of Forever, which really doesn't work unless you fell in love with it a long time ago.

^^I think The City... has a great climax, but in order to reach it the plot goes through too many contrivances.
