Season one of TOS, a mixed bag for some, a triumph for others. What's the best episode?

Boy, that's a tough one. You can't get any better than classic first season Star Trek. There's only one obvious stinker (The Alternative Factor), but apart from that this season is stellar!

However, I choose Space Seed, The Cage and This Side of Paradise.

Looks like my vote for Balance of Terror conforms with the majority. I think this ep, of all the first season eps, summarizes what's best about ST. Close second would have to be The Devil in the Dark, as it's message of not judging a book by its cover is an apt one, and one ST always did well. -- RR

There's so many good ones in this season, it's hard to pick just three. However, I narrowed it down to:

What Are Little Girls Made Of? (spooky and suspenseful)
A Taste of Armageddon (great story and great message)
The Devil In The Dark (the pure essence of Star Trek)

There are a lot of episodes I like here. Most of them in fact. But if I gotta pick one then I'll go with "The Corbomite Maneuver." For me it's Star Trek at its purest and what I like most about the series.

I liked Balance of Terror best but I voted for the Cage. Experience on this board says that BoT will win easily, and I think the Cage is usually underrated so I voted to give it some artificial support.
