Best and worst Trek games

The Best:
Birth of the Federation. All the hundreds and may be thousands of hours I spent on there...and I still pull it out and play it sometimes.

The Worst:
Dominion Wars. This had a lot of promise, but it was too slow, sluggish, and just awful to run, unless you're Bill Gates and own the latest in computer technology.

And, as an example, here's another contender for worst: Star Trek Pinball.

YAY! Someone mentions Pinball! (awful, awful, concept).

The worst ever, IMHO was Starship Creator. I PAID for it. Sat on the train for >1hr and rushed in to install it as well. The insult. ;)

I liked the two pinball games. Granted the TOS one I played at home ate my quarters an awful lot and then didnt let me play.

I think Legacy left me with the biggest feeling of dissapointment, i was expecting much more, and the game was capable of much more, but the developers never delivered.

Best:
Bridge Commander, sure it's not overly complex, but that's a good thing. Plus, the mod community for it is amazing.

Worst:
Definitely Starship Creator, I got it expecting something like the Sims character customization (or at least the customizable car games out there) but when I got it, it was far from exciting.

(of what I have played...)

Best:

25th anniversary (all platforms) - VERY TOS, great puzzles

Judgment Rites - Great sequel, plus Trelane!

EF, EFII - great SP and MP. Nice graphics.

Bridge Commander - somewhat emmersive but the missions are too repetitive.

Birth of the Federation - utterly playable 10+ years later

Armada - same as BoTF. still utterly playable.

Starfleet Academy - I actually like this...acting is so/so but it does kinda feel like you're there and dealing with your squad's interpersonal relationships.

A Final Unity - 25th anniversary for the TNG cast, basically. Great missions and characterization.

The Fallen - Great to see some familiar (and unfamiliar) parts of the station. Too bad Avery Brooks did not voice Sisko!

Worst:

Away Team - most maps you can just band your group together and phaser everybody. The one 'stealth' mission you have to do is almost impossible. 'Commandos' this ain't.

Dominion Wars - clunky, crummy play control, confusing too.

Legacy - for the PC anyway, you have to fight to get usable controls. no cutscenes and the story was chopped to pieces.

Starship Creator - OK for what it was, but too few choices

What, no Star Trek V? No Kobyashi Alternative? No Strategic Tactical Simulator for the Atari 2600? Man, if you're going to cover the best and worst of ALL Trek games, hard to believe you've really scratched the surface here....

Word.

I loved Stellar Track for the Atari when I was about 8.

Begin, an ASCII PC game that played like a simplified Star Fleet Battles and dated to ~1990 was very good, too.

The worst ever, IMHO was Starship Creator. I PAID for it. Sat on the train for >1hr and rushed in to install it as well. The insult. ;)
I agree. Paying for it sucked. But it looked so sweet on the store shelf.
What a disappointment. To be able to build your own ship and then not really do anything with it. Lame.

If you liked Begin check out www.starfleetproject.com

It is a windows port and is very faithful to Begin 2.

EGATrek #1!
I loved that game! I still have it on a floppy somewhere, but I can't get it to run on any of my computers... the DOS window won't initialize it for some reason...

I like Legacy for the Xbox. The controls were just fine, the graphics were awesome, and besides my one complaint that in skirmish mode the AI always chooses the best dreadnought available(and the best is always available), I thought the game was pretty good. It keeps me entertained.

I also love Starfleet command. i went out of my way to find Starfleet Command III a few months back and I love it. I didn't have a problem with going in circles, It's more realstic than you would see in say an episode of TNG where the Enterprise and whatever enemy vessel would just sit in one spot as the two ships fired at each other... and the mods for it don't cease to keep me busy.

And as for Elite Force... I finished the game in one day... You can't do the arcade mode without a second human player, and the levels for the arcade mode were all really small... I liked the story mode, but now that I've finished it... the game just sits there, I can't use it unless I find someone else willing to play, or I go through the story again...

For me Elite Forces 1 & 2 are 2 of the best, I'd also include Armada and Bridge Commander in that one as well. I think Final Unity was amusing as well I think you could on occasion go off course on mission and end up battling Romulans

Armada, the FRIST AND BEST ADDITION, was a cool game. I still play it to this day when I want to have mindless fun and waste time. Though, I tinker with the setting and make the DEFIANT as powerful as Q, but oh well..its still fun.
