Best acted Janeway episode

Janeway did look great in a her Killing Game tux and I think the pocket watch worked on her for the same reason.

It always struck me as odd that he gave her a pocket watch designed for a man. There are such things as a lady's pocket watch. They are quite lovely, and I think they would actually fit Kathryn's personality better given her leanings toward Victorian era things.

I don't know why, but that was always a distraction for me.
I was always amused that his gift to her was a watch in an ep. based on time.

Oh man, I never made that connection before.

Well, I feel silly right now...

Only reason I did was because just like you, I thought a pocket watch was an odd gift to give a lady. Then I made the connection to the eps. theme and it made me laugh.

But I liked the story that went with it, a ship alone who despite the odds, came home!

Right. The pocket watch was a replica of the one carried by the captain who returned his ship (what was left of it) to England after being "lost at sea." That's why he gave her a man's style pocket watch.

Chakotay says: "It's a replica of the chronometer worn by Captain Cray of the British Navy, His ship was hit by a typhoon in the Pacific. Everyone back in England thought they were killed but eight months later Cray sailed his ship into London harbour. There wasn't much left of it, a few planks, half a sail, but he got his crew home."

I think it is totally appropriate. I can see Janeway putting it on display in her ready room under a glass dome as a reminder that some captains make it home against all odds.

I suppose that, by that point in the storyline, I was so caught up in Janeway being all... Janeway and the partial uniform... with the form fitting pants and the tank top...

*clears throat*

I was distracted.

You lost me.

I wouldn't say this this one is the best Janeway moment, but I found it very touching for some reason.

It's "Course Oblivion", where crew begins getting sick, and discovers that they're actually replicas of the real crew.

So they have to rush back to the planet they came from.

Janeway is quiet and strong throughout the episode, and the music matches her acting-it came off very effective, IMO.

You can't help but to feel really sorry for the crew in this episode even though you know they weren't the real crew and just replicas.

Year of Hell makes me want a pocket watch. Such a good episode, kind of a shame that none of it happened.

Excellent point--which means that Chakotay probably gave her that watch eventually and that she probably kept it. :techman:

I think I saw Admiral Janeway wearing it during the party scene near the beginning of "Endgame". If I can ever stomach watching that episode again I'll have to verify that.

Off I run, to Youtube land!

Was there ever an episode where Mulgrew didn't perform above and beyond the call of duty? Her and Patrick Stewart have got to be two of the greatest actors to walk into Star Trek so I could never say there was an episode that I didn't like her in. She was always brilliant, in my opinion. But one scene really stands out for me outside of the more obvious ones. The end of the episode The Thaw, or the episode with the clown that had me in the fetal position, where she's with the Clown and she's telling him that she's a hologram and can beat him since she can't be afraid and that's all that he is, a representation of fear. Loved it!

Go to 3:31 to start seeing your "watch.

Now, I can see why you were confused, since the lower half does indeed resemble a pocket watch and the J/Cer in me is SCREAMING to believe that it is a pocket watch, alas the rational part of my brain is saying... drat. I don't think so. :(

Now.... if there's anyone out there who would like to convince me I'm wrong, PLEASE DO!
Yeah, it's hard to say but seeing that Adm. Janeway regrets Chakotay passing away and it is a reunion, I would guess it is. I think Janeway would wear it to have some part of his memory there with them.

:guffaw::guffaw:

BTW, I think you're one of the few that I've ever seen hear that last line the clown says before he fades out. I love that "Drat" was his last comedic joke.

While Mulgrew & Stewart are great, I've never liked how Mulgrew did death/wounded scenes or how Stewart portrays crying. It think his crying looks go if he's on stage and you're in the audience but close up on camera, you can see he's faking it. He does start by crying, he just goes into full on balling every time.

:) I think I love Exodus! ;)

I've recently read a poem, that makes me think of Janeway and her two loves, Chakotay and Seven.

As you read it, realize its Chak & Seven speaking.

Wait for Me (by Konstantin Simonov a Russian poet who wrote this poem about a soldier in the war asking his beloved to wait for his return)

Wait for me, and I'll return...

Only wait very hard...

Wait when you are filled with sorrow...

Wait in the sweltering heat...

Wait when the others have stopped waiting...

Forgetting their yesterdays...

Wait. For I'll return, defying every death....

And let those who do not wait say that I was lucky...

They will never understand that in the midst of death...

You with your waiting saved me...

Only you and I know how I survived...

It's because you waited, as no one else did.
